PERSONABLE JACK FOSTER `LIKED TEACHING PEOPLE TO FLY'- Oct 10, ‘98, The CA, by Dave Hirschman: James Jackson `Jack' Foster of Somerville, Tn., was a natural pilot who made flying demanding Navy fighters of WWII seem effortless. After the war, he remained a civilian flight instructor & taught hundreds how to fly. "There are dozens of pilots at FedEx & the airlines who learned to fly from Jack," said John McCollum, former student & close friend of Mr. Foster's for 8 years. "I know he took a lot of pride in that & in the accomplishments of all of his students." Mr. Foster, 74, died of heart disease. Mr. Foster was a retired Memphis City Schools teacher, an accomplished trumpet player, a locksmith and owned a variety of aviation-related businesses over the years. He never married. "Jack Foster didn't want to have a boss or a schedule - and he was that way his whole life," said Sol Radford, a pilot who knew Foster more than 20 years. "He liked teaching people to fly & going places. And everywhere he went, he made friends." Mr. Foster flew a variety of planes ranging from single-engine trainers, high-performance Navy fighters to multi-engine transports. "He was the best instructor," McCollum said. "..always complimenting his students & never intimidating them. ..a real gentleman." 5 yrs ago, he began teaching aerobatic flying at Fayette County Airport in Somerville. He said that it instilled confidence in pilots to know they could control an airplane upside-down as well as right-side up. "I'm from the old school," he said, "When I learned to fly, every student learned how to loop and roll and spin. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything." Mr. Foster was an aircraft dealer in the 1960s-70s. When he became ill, McCollum and wife Faye cared for him. "He was like the father I never had," McCollum said. He left most of his possessions including a collection of historical aviation photographs to the McCollums. Burial is at Forest Hill East. He leaves a niece, Barbara Foster of Collierville, who helped care for him. Send memorials to a charity of the donor's choice.
