The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program offers free services designed to educate citizens on the
importance of groundwater protection, safety, and preservation. This guide is a supplement to many of the
programs offered by the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program. This resource directory is meant to
assist residents in finding environmental resources easily. The information has been compiled randomly
and is not meant to focus on one subject area or one organization. The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship
Program neither recommends nor endorses the services or products of any particular company in this
directory. The quality of service provided by each company or organization is neither known nor implied
by this listing. The Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program, by providing this resource directory,
does not guarantee that the companies are or are not in compliance with applicable federal and/or state
laws.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
There are many household items that cannot be recycled and that should not be thrown out with your
weekly trash pick up. These items are unsafe because they are harmful to our environment and can
contaminate our groundwater. Most of these items can be identified by their symbols found on the product
label. Items such as oil, used oil, oil filters, antifreeze, cleaning chemicals, expired medicine, paint, paint
thinner, batteries, pesticides, herbicides, mercury thermometers, and pool chemicals are all examples of
items that need a proper disposal. Some cities hold drives through out the year for the public to bring these
items in for proper disposal.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
Many ordinary house hold products are hazardous to dispose of and demand careful treatment. Some
materials that should be handled with care include batteries, oil-based paints, thinners, solvents, varnish,
wood strippers and preservatives, kitchen and bath cleaner, some glues, pesticides and pest poisons. If
these products are put into the trash, there is a possibility that they can contaminate our groundwater.

 The West End Transfer Station is located on the north side of U.S. 41 west of Ishpeming, just west of
the new DNR field station.
 The Marquette site is located at the Marquette Area Wastewater Treatment Plant on U.S. 41 south of
Marquette near the Prison.
 The Skandia/West Branch Transfer Station is located on Carlshend Road west of the intersection of
U.S. 41 and M-94 in Skandia Township.
 The Gwinn site is located at the Forsyth Township public works garage area off Johnson Lake Road at
192 West Depot Road in Gwinn.
CLEAN SWEEP
Clean Sweep is a program designed to dispose of unused or unusable pesticides and hazardous waste that
are stored on your property. Individuals can bring unwanted waste for disposal by calling one of the Clean
Sweep Coordinators below. Some fees may apply.

RECYCLING
Recycling is the act of treating or processing waste materials so that they can be used again to make
something new. It is a great practice that is becoming more popular everyday. Recycling reduces the
amount of waste materials that ends up in land fills and also reduces the amount of natural resources used
to make new materials from scratch. Studies show that over half of the items throw away at home can be
recycled. Contact your local recycling center to see what materials that they accept.

The best way to dispose of leaves and lawn clippings is to compost them. Composting is a simple, natural
process of converting raw organic material into rich, moist soil. Composting can be done regardless of
where you live or how large your property is. Composting can keep your yard waste out of landfills.

HEALTH DEPARTMENTS
Environmental Division in the following Health Departments handle well and septic permits and issues,
land evaluation, and on-site sewage issues. As a private well owner, you are responsible for the
maintenance of your well and the monitoring of your water quality. It is recommended that you sample
your well for coliform bacteria and a partial chemical scan each year. The water sample bottles are
available at all of the County Health Department Environmental Health (EH) Division.

SEPTIC PUMPING

signs that your septic system is failing include sewage surfacing over the drain field, sewage back-ups in
