3 step “ARE” assertion model:
Assertion: Debate has nothing to do with English 102
Reasoning (because-clause): because English 102 is not a speaking class, it’s a writing
class
Evidence ("for example," etc): I call upon the expert testimony of the UNM student
handbook, which says that English 102 is “argumentative writing.”
4 step refutation model:
1. "They say" Restate the opponent's assertion:
They say that debate has nothing to do with English 102
2. "But" Offer your refutation:
But this is clearly not the case
3. "Because" Provide the reasoning for your refutation:
But this is clearly not the case, because English 102 focuses on argumentative
writing, and debate is argumentation itself
4. "Therefore" Your conclusion based on your argumentation:
Therefore, good debate is actually essential to good argumentative writing
