IEB 2014 Regional Conference Workshop Guide Prepared by IEB Members Barbara Stanfield and Sue Pelchat PROCESS: Welcome and self introductions by IEB Rep(s); explanation of workshop 2-3 minutes Good Morning/Afternoon, I am (name/title). Introduce the rest of the presentation team. Thank you for choosing to attend this workshop, TIPS FOR TOPS. Of course, you are the TOPS. And we are here with TIPS to inform and remind leaders of things that will make everyone’s life flow a little more smoothly. Our goals today are: 1) to help you recognize the importance of different leadership styles within each group. 2) to offer you a collection of leadership tips to broaden your current wealth of information about Alpha Delta Kappa We’ll start with an icebreaker to get you thinking about leadership. ICEBREAKER (Keep it moving!) minutes 8 -10 Leadership Style Activity On the wall or on tables, have the four compass directions posted with leadership style descriptions. NORTH Likes to get things done. Makes decisions. Is fast and determined. SOUTH Does things with feelings. Considers everyone’s opinions and feelings. Cooperates. EAST WEST Looks at the big picture. Pays attention to details. Expands all horizons. Plans ahead. Brainstorms all possibilities. Is logical and asks questions. To help you decide which is YOUR leadership style, we’re going to identify ourselves with a compass direction. Please make a choice in the following examples, according to which kind of activity you generally prefer. In each of the examples, we’ll give you two choices: Would you prefer to: a) Do a job you enjoy? OR b) Chat for a couple of hours with a friend? If you are NORTH, you would choose to work at a job you enjoy. If you are SOUTH, you would choose conversation with a friend. By show of hands, how many are NORTH? (Notice raised hands) And how many are SOUTH? Okay, now that you’ve gotten the hang of it, let’s try this question. Would you choose to a) Finish a report you’ve been working on? OR b) Look the report over one more time. If you are WEST, you would choose to finish the report. If you are EAST, you would look it over one more time. How many are WEST? EAST? Good. Now I’m going to ask you to move around the room. You’ll see some compass direction cards on the tables (or the walls). NORTH likes to get things done. SOUTH considers others’ feelings. WEST pays attention to details. And EAST considers all the options. I’d like you to read the descriptions of each compass direction posted, and decide which style is most like you. Then stand near your style. Give people a minute to move around the room and settle near their style card. Now I’d like you to sit with your same direction group to discuss the questions on the half sheets at the center of your tables. We’ll take five minutes for this discussion PERSONAL STYLE ACTIVITY 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What are the strengths of our style? What are the limitations of our style? What style do we find the most difficult to work with and why? What do other people need to know about us so that we can work together more effectively? What do we need to keep in mind about other compass points that will help us work more effectively within our Executive Boards and chapter leadership teams? Workshop leaders may have to signal when to switch to the next question to control time. If the group is very large, they might split to more than one table so that all are encouraged to participate in the discussions. Now that you’ve had time to consider the strengths and limitations of your style, I think you can imagine what would happen if our group had no NORTH, or no SOUTH, or no EAST, or no WEST. We’d be floundering when a specific style was needed to complete a certain task. CONCLUSION: We need leaders of all kinds. No one style is preferable over another. We just need to realize that there is more than one quality way to lead. On any team, there will be different leadership styles. It is important that we recognize that there are a variety of leadership styles, and that we must be able to work with people of each style. This Leadership Style Activity will be available online following the regional conferences this summer. Now we’ll move on to TIPS FOR TOPS. LEADERSHIP TIPS 10 minutes Let’s turn to the first page of this booklet where the IEB is pictured. I’ll give you a minute to read that message to yourselves. Allow 1 minute. International Executive Board Chairman Ivette Bender asked each member of the board to develop tips for leaders, which is in the handout you have received. We’re going to spend some time highlighting key points of each of the tip sheets today. For this activity, we’re going to assign a pair of topics from the booklet to each group and ask that you discuss them to find significant points you’ll want to be sure to share with leaders back home. For example, if we were reading about the role of the treasurer, we might point out that it’s most important to complete the e-postcard every year. As soon as I’ve given you your topics, you may begin to read and discuss. Different groups will be discussing different tips. We’ll take five minutes for this part of our workshop. Distribute topic pairs to each group. Combinations: 1) Agenda pg. 7 / Conference Planning pg. 12 - 13 2) Website pg. 6 / Historian pg.14 3) Promoting A∆K to Prospective members pg. 11 / Outside Publicity pg. 10 4) Bylaws pg. 8/ Fidelis Chapters pg. 9 After two minutes, tell them two minutes remain and that they should switch topics now. 5 minutes Let’s do a quick share of each topic – two different points from each sheet: (Solicit two points about each topic below.) AGENDA CONFERENCE PLANNING WEBSITE HISTORIAN PROMOTING ALPHA DELTA KAPPA OUTSIDE PUBLICITY BYLAWS FIDELIS CHAPTERS WHO SAID THAT? Okay, now we’re going to play a game called, “WHO SAID THAT?” We’ll give you a leadership quote, and you guess who said it. We’ll make it easy for you by giving you multiple choice options. Use the sign language letters for a, b, or c to indicate your answer. Model the letters. QUOTE #1: “The only real training for leadership is leadership.” WHO SAID THAT? Our first door prize will go to a person who chooses the author of this quote. Was it a) Suzi Orman, b) Antony Jay or c) June Bellamy …… What’s your answer? Choose someone who has the right answer. It was Antony Jay. If you want to lead you have to practice leading. Learning about leading isn’t nearly as valuable as actually leading people and learning from your successes and mistakes. Give away First Door Prize 1 minute We’re going to give you one more topic to read and discuss. (Hand out same topic cards to groups.) This time we’ll all have the same topics, Leadership pg. 2-5 and Protocol pg. 18 - 19 Allow time to read and discuss topic 5 minutes What important points would you take back to your own leadership team? Quickly share. 2 minutes There are many more tips that you can peruse when you have time to read more about leadership. This handout will be available on the International website following the conclusion of the regional conferences. QUOTE #2: People are more easily led than driven. WHO SAID THAT? a) David Harold Fink, b) Laura Bourgeois, c) Harriet Tubman Choose a winner. This leadership quote is an excellent reminder that leading is different from forcing people to do what you say. Award Second Door Prize 1 minute COMMUNITY BUILDER – Recognizing Leaders Within Our Region 10 – 12 minutes We’ve spoken a lot about leadership styles and tips for leaders today. Now we’d like to ask you to help others get to know some of the leaders in your S/P/N. One way to do that is to introduce your S/P/N leaders by simply naming them. Another way is to identify a leader who exemplifies a particular compass direction in a positive way, and explain why that’s true. For example, I think my chapter president is an amazing NORTH. She is fast and efficient, wastes no time, and gets each job done to perfection. Let’s take a half minute for each S/P/N to do this. S/P/N president (or one S/P//N representative) identifies members of the S/P/N executive board. OR, names one person who personifies a particular compass point in a positive way and explains how in thirty seconds or less. QUOTE #3 is our final quote: The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. WHO SAID THAT? a) Billy Graham, b) Graham Cracker, c) Max DePree Select a winner. People tend to forget that they are nothing without the people who follow. We must not take people for granted. Award Third Door Prize 1 minute WORKSHOP GOAL SUMMARY We have tried to help you recognize the need for different leadership styles within each group.
