Why is Thysanura Called as Silverfish By Alan Soffan Thysanura called as silverfish for two reason, first because their body covered with minute silvery scales, secondly, because they run sinuously looks like fish (Wooton, 1978.;Boror, 1981) entomology.uark.edu/museum/silfsh.html Reference Borror, De Long, Tripelhorn.1981. By Arya Widyawan Thysanura has silver-grey metallic in colour, two long slender antennae and three bristly ‘tails’ at the end of the body. The gleaming, metallic appearance of the thysanura, and the greasy feel of its body are due to the dense coating of tiny scales that clothes its body. The scale is grey above and creamy-white below. There are thousands of these scales, neatly arranged in overlapping rows and looking very much like the scale in the fish’s body (Skaife, 1979). Reference Skaife, S.H. 1979. African insect life. C.struik publisher, Johannesburg. By Boy Valenza Damiri Thysanura is called Silverfish because the body of this insect is covered with minute silvery scales and the movement of a silverfish is fish-like which dashes over wall or brickwork (Wootton, 1978). Thysanura as order which has common name silver fish, also like it. silver come the color of body insect which generally like silver or silverfish. But name fish that attack on this insect is very “unique” because generally insect live in terrestrial system not aquatic system. One reason that accepted are, the Thysanura have a mixture of scales and hairs on their body surface. As we know the fish characteristic have scale over surface of it’s body. So from this reason may name “ fish” came ( Atkins, 1978) References : □Atkins, Michael.D. 1978. Insect in perspective. MacMillan Publ. Co. New York, Collier MacMillan Publ. London By Koko Dwisutanto Thysanura are common household pests, its have been given many different eccentric names. For example, they are sometimes called "fish-moths" because of their covering of scales and their moth-like persistence as pests. Their silvery body and tendency to hang out in damp places has given rise to the name "silverfish." (Kellogg, 1905). The other most common name is "firebrat," given because they often inhabit warm places such as fireplaces and bakeries. Thysanurans are also called "bristletails" because of the bristle-like appendages on the tip of their abdomens. Thysanurans are usually about 12 mm in length (Borror et al., 1989).
