Psychiatry Program City of Sault Ste. Marie and District of Algoma. Services are delivered from Sault Ste. Marie. Children and youth who have serious mental health issues and are current active clients of AFS. SERVICE AREA WHO DOES THIS PROGRAM SERVE? PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Medication reviews are also provided to children/youth who are closed to AFS services but who received a psychiatric consultation from the visiting psychiatrist while receiving AFS intervention services. To provide psychiatric consultation to AFS clinicians and collateral professionals, and to families of children and youth with mental health difficulties who are active clients at AFS. Algoma Family Services (AFS) obtains periodic onsite psychiatric consultation for the children and youth who are currently receiving clinical services at AFS. A visiting child psychiatrist, Dr. Thaddeus Ulzen, conducts a consultation and assessment clinic thrice (3) times annually. Dr. Ulzen meets with the child/youth, primary caregivers, and involved professionals, to assess for serious mental health needs. Treatment recommendations are made and then followed-up by AFS clinicians and the medical practitioner who works most closely with the child/youth and family. AFS also works closely with Dr. Elizabeth Barrett, who practices at the Group Health Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. Referrals to Dr. Barrett are accessed through their individual physicians/paediatricians. Wait times are dependent on referral time and length until the next clinic. There is generally 3-4 months between clinics. WAIT TIMES The AFS Psychiatry Program may only be accessed through the staff clinician at AFS who is working with the child/youth.
