DAY 1: SEPTEMBER 4th, 2014 (THURS) – BARCELONA In the morning, we arrive at Barcellona Airport in Spain. We transfer to the center of the Catalana region, Barcelona, where we will get settled into our room at the hotel and have the remainder of the day free to rest or discover Barcelona on your own, Tonight enjoy a special Welcome Dinner with Sangria and Paella at La Fonda del Port Olimpic (a local restaurant). (B/D) DAY 2: SEPTEMBER 5th, 2014 (FRI) – BARCELONA This morning, bright and early after breakfast, we will meeting our Local Guide to tour the city to see the following sites: The Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece, who’s completion will take at least another decade, but is already becoming Barcelona’s most important landmark; La Rambla, which is a street or series of streets in central Barcelona, popular to both tourists and locals alike which includes a tree-lined pedestrian mall stretching for 1.2 kilometers between Barri Gotic and El Raval. We will also visit Barri Gotic, aka the Gothic Quarters of the old city of Barcelona where despite several changes undergone in the 19th and early 20th century, many of the buildings date from Medieval times, some as far back as the Roman settlement of Barcelona. Lunch is on your own. The balance of afternoon will be free once we return to our hotel. Are you into art? Why not take an optional tour to the Picasso Museum and enjoy over 3,800 pieces of his work which spans a lifetime. Dinner will be on your own. DAY 3: SEPTEMBER 6th, 2014 (SAT) – BARCELONA / SANT SADURNI d’ANOIA / VILAFRANCA DEL PENEDES / BARCELONA This morning, bright and early after breakfast, we will meeting our Local Guide to tour in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, the centre of Penedès wine and cava production. We will visit one of the bodegas (winecellars), Freixenet which is next to the railway station and enjoy a guided tour with wine tasting. Then we are off to Vilafranca del Penedès, the capital of the Penedès Wine and Sparkling wine region. In this historic city center, we will find a basilica which dates back to 1285 and the Palau Reial – Wine Museum of Vilafranca. We may have the opportunity to visit another bodega time permitting. Lunch will be at a local Winery. You will have free time to shop and take in the sites. We head back to our hotel late afternoon. Dinner will be on your own. (B/L) DAY 4: SEPTEMBER 7th, 2014 (SUN) – BARCELONA/LOURDES This morning, bright and early after breakfast, we depart our hotel in Barcelona, northbound for Lourdes, Frances. By evening, we will arrive in Lourdes and settle into our rooms for the next 2 nights. Lunch will be on our own during our travels of the day. There is a possibility that after dinner we will be able to visit on our own the sacred place of Saint Bernadette. Dinner will be at the hotel. (B/D) DAY 5: SEPTEMBER 8th, 2014 (MON) – LOURDES This morning, after breakfast, you will have a choice – stay behind and participate in either individual and group religious functions in Lourdes or join us for an optional tour of one of the best views of French Pyrénées from Lourdes – Le Pic Du Midi de Bigorre. The scene at Pic Du Midi Observatory is one out of a sci-fi movie - a fortified concrete and stone complex, packed full of metal domes, which sprawls across the top of a precipitous peak above the clouds. At an altitude of 2,877 meteres (9,349 feet), the sweeping view of the surrounding French Pyrénées is rivaled only by the site’s magnificently dark night. From there, we will visit the Château fort de Lourdes - a historic castle located in Lourdes. It is strategically placed at the entrance to the seven valley of Lavedan. Today Lunch is lncluded if you stay behind at the hotel and Dinner will be at the hotel with the entire group. DAY 6: SEPTEMBER 9th, 2014 (TUES) – LOURDES / ARGELES-GAZOST / LOURDES This morning, bright and early after breakfast, we board our motorcoach for a short drive to meet our Local Guide in Argeles-Gazost, a small town nestled in the Pyrénées Mountains. It has cute and compact downtown lines with shops and cafés, a thermal spa and a casino. You can enjoy the views of the valley and the colorful houses, fountains and a gorgeous market this Tuesday morning. Lunch will be on your own. After lunch, we head to the Bétharram Caves (Grottos), an amazing underground world on five levels – one on top of the other, decorated with a vast number of concretions – rock formations. DAY 7: SEPTEMBER 10th, 2014 (WED)– LOURDES / SALAMANCA This morning, bright and early, after breakfast, we depart for Salamanca, Spain; traveling north-westward toward Portugal for an overnight stay. We will stop Burgos for a brief tour with a Local Guide of the City. Burgos is a city in northern Spain, historic capital of Castile. It has many historic landmarks, of particular importance; the Cathedral of Burgos (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984), Las Huelgas Reales Monastery and the Cartuja of Miraflores - a large number of churches, palaces and other buildings from the medieval age remain. The city is surrounded by the Fuentes Blancas and the Paseo de la Isla parks. Lunch will be on your own in the city. We will arrive at our hotel for an overnight in Salamanca. Dinner will be either at the hotel or a local restaurant. (B/D) DAY 8: SEPTEMBER 11th, 2014 (THURS) – SALAMANCA/LISBON This morning, bright and early, after breakfast, we board our motorcoach bound for Lisbon, Portgual. (B/D) DAY 9: SEPTEMBER 12th, 2014 (FRI) – LISBON This morning, bright and early, after breakfast, we board our motorcoach to join our Local Guide for an all day excursion in Lisbon which was once the center of Europe’s longest-lived overseas empire. We will enjoy a drive through the Baixa quarter’s main squares, a walk through the cobblestone alleys of quaint Alfama, the popular quarter of the seamen and Fado singers. We will drive along the grand Avenida da Liberdade up to Pombal Square and stop for pictures of the Belem Tower and the Monument of the Discoverers. Also, we will visit Jeronimos Monastary with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Lunch will be on your own along the way. Dinner will be at either the hotel or a local restaurant. (B/D) DAY 10: SEPTEMBER 13th, 2014 (SAT) – LISBON / OBIDOES / ALCOBACA / NAZARÉ / FATIMA / LISBON This morning, bright and early, after breakfast, we will board our motor coach and later be joined by our Local Guide. We will stop in medieval Obidos and go back in time as you pass the main gate in the impressive perimeter wall and walk along the narrow streets. We then continue to Alcobaça to visit the CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA MONASTERY, built in the 12th century for 999 Cistercian monks. See the elaborate tombs of King Pedro I and his Castilian lover, Inês de Castro. Our next stop will be the fishing harbor of Nazaré, the perfect place for a leisurely lunch break on your own. In the afternoon, we visit the Holy Shrine, Fatima’s SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY. We then head back to Lisbon. Dinner is on your own unless you choose to join us for the optional tour. We will make a stop along the way to get lunch on our own and then continue on to our hotel. Tonight we will enjoy some spanish cultural dancing at the Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus – a small theater-courtyard with first class flemenco performers after dinner (late showing). (B/D) DAY 12: SEPTEMBER 15th, 2014 (MON) – SEVILLE (SEVILLA) This morning, after breakfast we board our motorcoach and head to the Barrio Santa Cruz to be joined by our Local Guide which is bounded by the Alcazar, the Jardines de Murillo, Santa Maria La Blanca, and Calle Mateas Gago. The barrio used to be the old Jewish quarter with narrow streets formed like a maze. The air of the barrio is perfumed with jasmine flowers and the orange trees that are found here. You will have free time to visit the shops, art galleries and peep into the beautiful patios though many of the iron gates of the surrounding palaces. Lunch will be on your own. After lunch we will visit Alcazar – a beautiful medieval Islamic palace showcasing a unique fusion of Spanish, Christan and Moorish architecture. We return to our hotel late afternoon.
