SINGING FOR SYRIANS [INSERT VENUE, DATE & TIME] In partnership with: The Hands Up Foundation Christian Aid Welcome Since 2011, Syria has been devastated by a horrific civil war, and its people have suffered greatly. Sadly, there is no end to this abhorrent situation and as the civilian death toll rises Europe and the world is faced with the worse humanitarian disaster since World War 2. However, it is possible to help. Raising funds across the UK and directing them to specific projects in and around Syria means we can support some of Syria’s most vulnerable. “Singing for Syrians” is an initiative offering a friendly and positive way to raise money. Successful concerts such as today’s are setting a precedent for subsequent years, which will be vital if Syria is ever to recover from the current disaster. The money raised from the “Singing for Syrians” initiative will be supporting two charities: The Hands Up Foundation and Christian Aid. For He is our childhood's pattern; Day by day, like us, He grew; He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles, like us He knew; And He cares when we are sad, And he shares when we are glad. He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall: With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy. And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heaven above: And He leads His children on, To the place where He is gone. READING CAROL Extract from The War Horse by Michael Morpurgo Read by [INSERT NAME] O little town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell O come to us, abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel READING ‘The Nativity Play’ from Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell Read by [INSERT NAME] CAROL In the Bleak Mid Winter In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart.
