here are 3 different versions of the accessibility measure that we’ve used in previous studies (e.g., the ‘97
JPSP suppression package). In some studies we have done repeated measures designs and use two
different measures with 4 death fragments each. In most studies, however, we only have one assessment
of death thought accessibility and use a measure with 6 death fragments (though we’ve also used 7 or 8
item measures). To score the questionnaires, we simply add up the number of death-related word
completions.
For the measure beginning with “BUR _ _ D” , the possible death fragments are #1(buried),
#5(dead), #12(grave), #15(killed), #19(skull), & #22(coffin).
For the measure beginning with “TEA _ _”, the possible death-related fragments are #2(corpse),
#11(murder), #20(grave), & #24(killed).
For the measure beginning with “CO _ _ S”, the possible death-related fragments are #6(dead),
#12(buried), #16(coffin), & #20(skull).
The measure beginning with “SP _ _ N” is a neutral in case that is needed.
