FIELDWORK GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS
RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
It is each student’s responsibility to complete the following administrative tasks.
 Complete the FIELDWORK APPLICATION and turn it in to your professor
on the first day of class.
 Prof. Peacock will contact you via your RMC email with your placement
information. Check it often!
 Contact your cooperating teacher via email the same day you get your
placement using the template provided and copy your education professor on
that email. (Tip: Find your teacher’s email at
http://hanover.k12.va.us/empemail/Default.asp)
 Follow-up if you do not hear from your cooperating teacher within 3 days.
 Once your first school visit is scheduled, handwrite a letter of introduction
using the provided template and deliver it to the school office.
 Deliver a copy of the specific fieldwork requirements for your class to your cooperating teacher. (Get this
from your professor.)
 Complete the RANDOLPH-MACON STUDENT CONTACT INFORMATION form and give it to your
teacher on your first scheduled visit.
 Toward the end of your fieldwork, you will receive an EVALUATION FORM. Personally deliver the form to
your cooperating teacher.
Professional Responsibilities
Represent Randolph-Macon College well.
Be a positive role model for the students.
Dress professionally. Women wear skirts, dresses (modest, not
mini) or dress pants. Tops should not show cleavage or midriff.
Men wear shirts, ties and socks.
 Schedule your visits in advance with your teacher. Plan a minimum
of 10 visits for EDUC 221/222 and EDUC 322 or whatever
minimum your professor requires.
 Always arrive on time. Call the school
and/or teacher immediately if an
emergency prevents you from attending as schedule.
Keep an accurate log of your time spent in the classroom. At the end of each visit,
have your cooperating teacher sign your time log.
Be helpful, positive and engaged.
Take initiative. Volunteer to assist in the class.
Use standard English grammar in oral and written communications.
At the end of your fieldwork, handwrite a personal thank you note to your teacher and
the students.








Praxis Requirement:
Taking Praxis 1 or submission of SAT/ACT substitute scores is requirement for all Education courses
after Education 220. In Education 220, you were given written and oral information about this
requirement for Education and teaching licensure in Virginia. IF your professor does not have your
name on the Education spreadsheet to show you have submitted Praxis 1 scores, you will not be
allowed to remain in this class without proof of registration. The registration must be completed before
the end of the first week of classes (this week). Should you have special circumstances, you need to set
up an appointment with Professor Leslie Roberson and copy your professor on the email to set up this
appointment.
On the day you receive your placement information, make initial
contact with your cooperating teacher via email using this
template. Remember to proofread your email before hitting send.
This is the first impression your teacher will have of you.

Thank you for allowing me to assist and observe in your classroom for my Randolph-Macon
College fieldwork for (name of RMC Course). I would like to begin as soon as possible.
I can be reached via my email at (email address) or phone at (phone number). I am
available to come to your class (list ALL available days and times). Please let me know the best
way to communicate with you.

Once you get an email confirmation from your
cooperating teacher and have scheduled your first visit,
deliver a neat, handwritten letter using the following
template to the school your will be visiting. Deliver the
letter to the office.
Dear (Mr. or Ms. ___________),
I am excited about the opportunity to assist and observe in your class as part of my
Randolph-Macon College fieldwork for (name of course). I plan to come (list days and times) as
we planned. I will be able to assist for a minimum of (hours/# of visits).
I would like to assist and be involved in the classroom however is most helpful to you. I
also need to teach one mini-lesson as part of my time in your class
My email is (email) and my phone number is (phone number). I look forward to learning
and contributing in your classroom.

Fieldwork Tips for Smart Students



Read this fieldwork information packet carefully and follow
instructions. Contact your instructor if you have questions.
Be professional and helpful! (Psst…You may need a
reference from this teacher in the future.)
Plan to get your placement hours completed as soon as
possible. Unanticipated school closings, scheduling conflicts and illness can make
completing your hours difficult if you wait too late.
 You must sign in at the school office on a computer that will generate a
name badge at the beginning of each visit. Enter “Mr.” or “Ms.” as
your first name so that your name badge will reflect what the students
all you.
