Punk rock, garage rock and especially lo-fi slacker rock are the treasured ingredients of GRAVY’S unique rock alloy, and the latter genre in particular has always been close to Nikolaj Grummesgård’s heart, and has had side project status for the past five or six years. Nikolaj Grummesgård formed The Defectors along with Martin Budde in 1996, but left the band soon afterwards – immediately prior to the release of their first album – due to lack of creative space within the band. But via The Defectors, Nikolaj was discovered by the legendary psychobilly outfit Godless Wicked Creeps who at that point needed a guitar player. He stepped in and served as guitar hero from hell until the band disintegrated in 2002. Since then, his indisputable talents have been employed towards developing the vast heap of ideas that’s been piling up in his head over the years, hammering and compressing them into the shape of something truly original. From that mould GRAVY has risen. The mix of impulses is clearly heard in GRAVY’S majestically subdued (or subdued majestic) soundscape. Various musical styles and bearings meet and mate, providing the end result with a kaleidoscopic and comprehensive quality. You would be forgiven, though, for claiming that great melodies and the odd unexpected twist comprise the main galactic arms of the amazing GRAVY universe. The awesome GRAVY pitch ranges from the dreamy over the relentless to the chaotic, but it’s always done with an energy the sheer audacity of which is much required, but rarely found in Danish rock music. This has been made possible with the help of Jens Søndergaard – drummer in PowerSolo – whom Nikolaj Grummesgård brought in on the project as both creative partner and drummer. The music of GRAVY is bold and defiant – he’s not afraid of creating a deeply personal musical sphere, consisting of honesty and sincerity combined with a profound and loving perception of the classic rock/pop tradition. Even though the main inspirational force behind GRAVY’S music can be said to be the American indie-rock tradition and the 1960’s & 1970’s psyche sound respectively, a far-reaching scope of influences can be detected in the music. The beat of the 1950’s are present in the tunes along with contemporary American and British underground activities, and the payoff rhymes with ‘right now’. The lyrics reflect GRAVY’S heartfelt passion and unrivalled personal commitment to his music. He addresses the past while looking at the future with optimistic yet cagey appreciation. This means that he’s following the path less travelled and avoids the confines of run-of-the-mill genre conventions. We’re left with a beautiful child called GRAVY, the offspring of mind-blowing talent and a humble understanding of tradition. This has furthermore been made possible on the live front by incorporating the following members in the band: Mads Nygaard (synth and organ) and Jonas Linnet (rhythm guitar) – both from the pop band Sterling – as well as Hans Emil Hansen (bass), composer in the highly respected indie rock band Traening. These 3 members are now the backbone of the band along with Jens Søndergaard and Erik Toffer, who both play drums live to create a wider and more creative sound! ............................................................................................................................................................................
