Sakai Usage Data Work Group: Sample User Report
This sample report for a single user, parkcz, shows usage by user in a single report that combines data from different
sources. It is presented in this format to be a readable example; however, the required format would be more like a
spreadsheet in which each row represents a unique user, and columns are the variables listed here and the current
values for each user.
Some definitions:

Views are the number of times the users viewed this content. This is generally a higher value than visits. For
example, “parkcz viewed resources 20 times the last week”.

Visits are the number of sessions that included views of this content. For example, “parkcz logged in 5 times last
week.”

Variables are the views, objects, or attributes we want to measure.

Values are the quantitative measurement. This typeface indicates that we want to “drill down” into that value to look
at the specific views, objects, or attributes that are included.
The Source column lists one of several data sources that currently store usage data.

The Sakai database. This typeface refers to the table in the Sakai database that stores the data.

Event logs. Text files parsed by day that list code-specified events and associated users, sites, and times. These
are generated from a database query and imported into third-party log analysis software (in the UM case, that’s
NetTracker).

Web server access logs. Standard access logs specified and produced by the web server software (in the UM
case, that’s Apache).
