Silk workshop - Ramelton - Co Donegal 21st/22nd May 2011 This is an introduction to the classic technique of silk painting but is suitable for all whatever your experience of painting. The weekend will give you the skills to complete a project of your choice such as a silk scarf, piece of wall art, cushion cover etc. A light lunch is provided and refreshments will be available throughout the day. The setting is the lovely Orchard House Retreat Centre in Ramelton, providing a relaxing environment. The tutor, Karen O’Kane, is a working designer with a studio in Ramelton and is an experienced teacher of this technique. Small pots (i.e. film canisters, herb containers, yoghurt pots): rag for cleaning brushes Paper, pencils 2B, 4B, eraser. Any designs or pieces of material which particularly interest you. Day one: Morning Using templates to practice the technique of applying gutta and paint on small pieces of silk. Demonstration of the serti technique. Presentation of different artists work who use silk as their medium. Practice making simple designs and putting them onto small canvas to make greeting cards. Day one: Afternoon Experimenting with different effects such as using alcohol or salt on the silk. Working from a still life to make a 2D design and then applying it to the silk. Discussing ideas for big project. Sketching ideas and making colour palette. Day two: All day Start on the big project, which may be a wall hanging, painting for framing, scarf, cushion cover or tie. Finalise design, gutta, paint and fix. Materials provided Silk, paint, gutta, frames, silk pins, card blanks.
