Science Fair winners receive awards at International Science Fair –
Local student wins Best of Category
In a total of three award ceremonies, four students from the Detroit Metro area won numerous prestigious
awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Cleveland, Ohio, including overall
best of category and a trip to the Nobel Prize Ceremonies. These special awards were presented on May
15-16, 2003 and consisted of key awards from scientific, professional and educational organizations,
governmental organizations, and overall category awards.
Kunil Raval, 17, State of Michigan overall Science Fair winner with Sam Howell, from Saginaw Arts
and Sciences Academy, Saginaw, Michigan. Project title: “A Novel Room Temperature Fuel Cell
utilizing a carbonate Ionic Liquid”
American Chemical Society, Second award of $500
Ashtavadhani Vidwan Ambati Subbaraya Chetty (AVASC) Foundation, for projects that
display outstanding creativity, ingenuity and have the potential to alleviate the human condition or
mark a substantive advance in the scientific field - Award of $500 US Savings Bond
Caltech JPL, for outstanding projects in the areas of science, technology and engineering that
contribute to Caltech and JPL’s mission of robotic space exploration, Special Achievement
Award Certificate.
U.S. Air Force – Second Place award of $1,500 plus a medallion and a certificate of recognition.
The teacher will receive a grant in the amount of $300
U.S. Army – First Place award of $3,000 in savings bonds, A certificate of Achievement and a
gold medallion
U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development – For projects that demonstrate outstanding
achievement in research and scientific knowledge in several areas of interest – 4th Place award of
$500
National Aeronautics and Space Administration – For projects that best relate to NASA’s
mission. All expense-paid trip to attend the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama and a
certificate
Patent and Trademark Office/U.S. Department of Commerce / Patent and Trademark
Office Society – First place award of $200
Sam Howell, 16, State of Michigan overall winner with Kunil Raval, from Saginaw Arts and Sciences
Academy, Saginaw, Michigan. Project Title: “A study of the relationship between lymphocytes with
lymphomatoid papulosis and mucosal cells from a subject and descendants using PCR identification.
Biochemistry – Best of Category Intel will present winner with a $5,000 scholarship and a high
performance computer. Additionally, a $1,000 grant will be given to their school and the Intel
ISEF Affiliated fair they represent (Michigan Science Fair)
Biochemistry – First Place – First place award of $3,000
U.S. Navy and Marine Corps – Scholarship in the amount of $8,000
Ohio State University – Scholarship award of $5,000 per year for four years
Indiana University – Tuition scholarship of $5,000 per year for four years
Ethan Street, 18, Winston Churchill High School, Livonia, MI. Project Title: “Continued Fractions of
Quadratic Laurent Series”
Seaborg SIYSS Award – The SIYSS is a multi-disciplinary seminar highlighting some of the
most remarkable achievements by young scientists from around the world. The students have the
opportunity to visit scientific institutes, attend the Nobel lectures and press conferences, learn
about Sweden and experience the extravagance of the Nobel festivities during their trip in
December, 2003
Mathematics – Best of Category Intel will present winner with a $5,000 scholarship and a high
performance computer. Additionally, a $1,000 grant will be given to their school and the Intel
ISEF Affiliated fair they represent (Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit)
Mathematics – First Place – First place award of $3,000
American Mathematical Society, Second Place Award of $500
Ohio State University – Scholarship award of $5,000 per year for four years
Colin Sprinkle, 18, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan. Project Title: “VLSI Design
Automation”
IEEE Foundation, for outstanding achievement in the area of engineering, an award of $250.
The winner also receives an IEEE student membership and an IEEE Society membership for the
duration of the scholarship, as well as an engraved brass and walnut plaque and framed certificate.
