H.R. No. 660
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The passing of Villamae Morehead Williams on April 8, 1995, at the age
of 81, has brought a great loss to the many friends and relatives of this beloved lady; and
WHEREAS, Born September 25, 1913, to Katie Mae and Thomas Barker Morehead in
Bay City, she was graduated from Bay City High School, and from an early age she
demonstrated an acute interest in family history; and
WHEREAS, After many years spent researching her family tree, Mrs. Williams became
a certified genealogist, but her love of history was not confined to that arena; her passion for
preserving past events led her to become chair of the Chambers County Historical Commission,
and during her productive tenure in that office, she directed the design and planning of the
commission's office and museum and helped to earn the organization status as a certified Texas
Resource Center; and
WHEREAS, She also dedicated her time and talents to many valuable history
publications, editing and compiling the Stephen F. Austin Register of Families, The Chambers
County Brand Book, and acting as editor on Volume II of the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas' Founders and Patriots of the Republic of Texas; and
WHEREAS, In order to help preserve the history of the southeast Texas area for future
generations of Texans, Mrs. Williams also authored or co-authored 15 historical markers in
Chambers County and surrounding counties; and
WHEREAS, This dynamic individual maintained active memberships in a variety of
organizations, including the Texas Gulf Historical Society, the Southeast Texas Genealogical
Historical Society, the Matagorda County Genealogical Historical Society, the Bay Area
Heritage Society, the National Genealogical Society, the Alamo Preservation Committee, and
others too numerous to mention; and
WHEREAS, Villamae Morehead Williams was a woman of rare warmth and wisdom;
although her presence is gone from us now, her remarkable spirit will surely live on in the hearts
of the many fortunate individuals whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas Legislature hereby
pay tribute to the life of Villamae Morehead Williams and extend sincere sympathy to the
members of her family: to her husband, Floyd Everett Williams; to her children and their
spouses, Drew and Marilyn Williams, Marcus Gil and Kathryn Williams Rector, and Everett and
Shirley Williams; to her brother and sisters-in-law, Barker Morehead, Marty Morehead, and
Eleanor Morehead; to her 10 grandchildren, Leslie, Cindy, Matthew, Jennifer, Amy, Tan, Tim,
Danny, David, and Christopher; to her three great-grandchildren; and to the many other friends
and relatives of this remarkable woman; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of
her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in
memory of Villamae Morehead Williams.
