ASSIGNMENT: LANGUAGE SKILLS RELATED TASKS (Words 750 – 1000) In this assignment you are asked to select an authentic text that you would use with your current TP group to develop and practise the receptive skills of reading or listening. Your choice of text should be based on the level of your group, their interests, their needs and any other factors you consider to be important. It is a good idea to get together with your colleagues to share ideas about the interests and needs of the class as a whole. However, each candidate must select a different text. Lastly, you should not focus on grammar or vocabulary in the assignment. Please reference your background reading and don’t forget to include a word count. Below is a recommendation for the headings and structuring of your assignment. Also, please submit a referenced copy of the text with the assignment. 1. Justification (approx 250 words): Say which receptive skill you’re focusing on and why and give a rationale for why you have chosen this specific text for this group of learners. You should refer to the readings you received in the Receptive Skills input session. 2. Sub-skills (approx 200 words): Say which 2 sub-skills could be practised using this text and describe what the sub-skills entail. You should refer to the readings you received in the Receptive Skills input session. 3. Tasks (approx 350 words): Design and submit tasks for practising the sub-skills mentioned in part 2 and say why these tasks will help you achieve your aims. 4. Productive Skills (approx 200 words): Suggest what productive language skills (speaking & writing) could be practised in relation to this text. You don’t need to attach tasks here just add some ideas for follow up activities. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Candidates can demonstrate their learning by: Correctly using terminology that relates to language skills and sub-skills. Relating task design to language skills development. Finding, selecting and referencing information from one or more sources using written language that is clear, accurate and appropriate to the task NB. Make sure that your work is accurate in terms of spelling, punctuation, grammar and discourse as this is taken into consideration in the grading of written work. Additional information on submission of assignments: The due date is final – no exceptions will be granted except in extenuating circumstances, as decided by the main course tutor. If the assignment is not satisfactory, all candidates have the opportunity of resubmitting it once, after feedback has been given by the tutors on the initial assignment. If you have to resubmit, hand in the first submission with the second submission.
