ROYAL HOBART HOSPITAL Paediatric Fellows, Registrars & Senior RMO’s 2011 The Royal Hobart Hospital is the largest public hospital in the State of Tasmania, Australia, serving a population of 500,000. It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Tasmania and the tertiary adult and paediatric referral centre for the state. The Department of Paediatrics is managed by a team of staff specialists in Neonatology, Paediatric Intensive Care, Paediatric Oncology, Community Paediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Paediatric Surgery and General Paediatrics. The Department is also assisted by VMO General Paediatricians and Child Psychiatry. Advanced and basic paediatric training positions are available and there is an active registrar training program including written and clinical exam preparation with an excellent pass rate. Research is actively encouraged and supported; there is financial support for conference leave. There are outpatient clinics in Neonatal Follow-up, General Paediatrics, Encopresis and Enuresis, Oncology, Home Respiratory Support, Diabetes, Paediatric Surgery and Cystic Fibrosis. Visiting Subspecialists from the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, attend regularly in areas of Cardiology, Genetics, Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine and Paediatric Orthopaedics. The Department is going through a phase of rapid development with movement to a largely staff specialist based service and has recently opened a new combined Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit the General Paediatric Ward has also recently been fully renovated and a new paediatric outpatients and ambulatory care units is due to opened in July 2009. The available positions are: General Paediatrics Senior Registrar/Fellow Paediatric Acute Care This position is designed for an advanced trainee to provide senior support to the acute paediatric service. The main area of responsibility would be to supervise and support the general paediatric ward. There would also be involvement in neonatal and paediatric emergency transport service. Registrars (8 positions) These positions are to assist in the care of children in our acute in-patient and outpatient services, including NPICU and ambulatory care. The Royal Hobart hospital paediatric positions are accredited by the RACP for 24 months of basic training in paediatrics, and 18 months of advanced training in General Paediatrics. The registrar roster involves 6 persons with a night rotation followed by an equal number of days off. There is a 1:6 on-call roster for neonatal and paediatric transports for suitably experienced Registrars. Registrars are involved in medical student, resident teaching and research, with 1 week in 6 devoted to study/research/relief. The resident roster is basically a 1:5 structure. Four of these positions incorporate 6 month rotations to either the North West Regional Hospital, Burnie or Launceston General Hospital, Launceston. Both of these hospitals are accredited for rural training. Contracts for 12 months to 2 years are available. Senior Resident Medical Officers (3 positions) are available for 12 months, with 4 month rotations in General Paediatrics, Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care and Paediatric Surgery. These positions are accredited for 12 months of core basic training. Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Senior Registrar/Fellow (one position) to staff a new 11 bed NICU/PICU and 15 bed SCN. At present the position is accredited for 12 months of advanced training in Neonatology. The position involves Monday to Friday daytime supervision of the Unit and one midweek night on-call as the acting consultant. Paediatric Rehabilitation Senior Registrar/Fellow (one position) to provide clinical support to the Rehabilitation Service for children with physical disabilities as outpatients, day patients and inpatients of the Royal Hobart Hospital, Paediatric Rehabilitation Services Campus in Hobart, as well as outreach clinics to the North and NW of the State. The registrar predominantly works with the State-Wide Director Paediatric Rehabilitation, but also the Developmental Paediatrician whose main focus is autism spectrum disorders and developmental delay. A rewarding program has been designed for clinical service, education and training, assisting in research programs, and attendance at clinics allied to rehabilitation (e.g. Out of Home Care, orthopaedic service, allied health). Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is expected. Some after hours acute paediatric rostered service at the Royal Hobart Hospital is expected. This position may be accredited for advanced training in Paediatric Rehabilitation under the aegis of RACP and AFRM. It is possible that a suitable candidate could be appointed for 12 months for this purpose. Community Paediatrics Senior Registrar/Fellow (one position) This position is accredited for advanced training in community and general paediatrics and would be suitable for a senior trainee with some experience of community paediatrics, child mental health or public health. This new position involves working and training in child and adolescent mental health, child development, the home visiting service and child protection. There is also the opportunity to work in the area of paediatric policy development and service development at state level.
