OVERVIEW: This seminar provides definitions of
integrated disorders and programs and presents an
overview of how to approach the topic by using
organizing principles and tools. It examines the
scope of what practitioners working with persons
having co-occurring mental and substance use
disorders need to establish basic competency in
this area. It also explores the historic rationale for
splits in service provision and the necessity for
integrating approaches. Specific interventions will
be discussed, as will a review of the full array of
programs and services that may be needed by
persons with dual or multiple disorders and reviews
the terms in the Co-Occurring Competency Bulletin
released conjointly in February 2006 by the
Department of Health and the Department of Public
Welfare.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this program, participants
should be able to:
 define co-occurring disorders and describe
what constitutes integrated approaches to
working with persons having CODs
 examine major concepts and approaches
currently in the literature
 review personal attributes and skills
needed for effectively working with
persons with CODs
 explore the contents of Pennsylvania’s
COD Competency Bulletin
 identify resources useful in gaining more
knowledge about effective practices in
COD
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This program is
directed toward clinicians and other professionals
from both the mental health and substance abuse
treatment fields who work with individuals with cooccurring disorders.
TUITION: There is a $45.00 fee to attend this
training. Checks can be made payable to
Waynesburg University. Full tuition must
accompany the registration form. Refunds must be
requested in writing at least two weeks prior to the
program or a $15.00 administrative fee will be
deducted.

Southpointe is located just south of Pittsburgh
between Bridgeville and Canonsburg on I-79. From
I-79, travel to exit 48 (Southpointe/
Hendersonville). At the end of the exit, turn left if
you are on I-79 North or turn right if you are on I-79
South. Travel to a stoplight and turn right on to
Corporate Drive. Waynesburg University is located
in the Summit Corporate Center on the left side of
the road, directly across the street from the Hilton
Garden Inn.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
Certified Addiction Counselors/Certified Co-Occurring
Disorders Professional (CAC/CCDP): The Office of
Education and Regional Programming, Western Psychiatric
Institute and Clinic is certified by the Pennsylvania
Certification Board (PCB) to provide Certified Addictions
Counselor (CAC) and Certified Co-Occurring Disorders
Professional (CCDP) continuing education credits. 3.0 PCB
hours have been approved for participation in this training.
Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners
(CPRP): A total of 3.0 credit hours can be applied to training
hours for Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioners
(CPRP).
Counselors: Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is
recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors
(NBCC) to offer continuing education for National Certified
Counselors. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic adheres
to the NBCC continuing education guidelines. The program
is being offered for 3.0 continuing education credits.
Educators (Act 48): Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic
is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
to offer continuing education credits under Act 48 guidelines.
Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic adheres to the Act
48 Continuing Education Guidelines. The program is being
offered for 3.0 continuing education credits.
Licensed/Clinical Social Workers, Licensed
Professional Counselors, Licensed Marriage and Family
Therapists: LSW/LCSW/LPC/LMFT: This program is
offered for 3.0 hours of social work continuing education
through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh’s
School of Social Work, a Council on Social Work Educationaccredited school and, therefore, a PA pre-approved
provider of social work continuing education. These credit
hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW, LPC and LMFT
biennial license renewal. For information on social work

Mental Health Professionals: Nurses and other health care
professionals are awarded 0.3 continuing education units
(CEUs), which are equal to 3.0 contact hours.
Personal Care Home Administrators (Certificate of
Annual Administrator Training): 3.0 clock hours are
approved by the Department of Public Welfare Bureau of
Adult Residential Licensing. These clock hours may count
toward the 24 hours of annual training for administrators
required in 55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600 (relating to personal
care homes.
Psychologists: Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is
approved by the American Psychological Association to offer
continuing education for psychologists. Western Psychiatric
Institute and Clinic maintains responsibility for this program
and its contents. The program is being offered for 3.0
continuing education credits.
