Every spring, individual volunteers and groups join the Great American Cleanup™, the nation’s largest organized cleanup, beautification and community improvement program. Last year, over 2.3 million people in more than 15,000communities all across America volunteered to pick up millions of tons of litter, renew parks, plant community gardens, beautify of miles of roadway, and clean up rivers, lakes and seashores in their community, and more. The volunteers know that they really make a difference, and the results are dramatic! The communities look clean and beautiful, and there is a new sense of hometown pride and accomplishment. So, don’t wait for someone else to do it… volunteer for this year’s Great American Cleanup™. 14 I Want To Get Involved! What Do I Do? Where Do I Call? If you want to join an existing event... (Organization’s Name) organizes a number of large events in areas of the community that need the most help. You, or your group, can join one of these “critical need” events by calling (Coordinator Name). Call (Phone Number) If you want to do your own event... If you would like to focus on a specific neighborhood street, park or playground, we can help make your event a success. We can help you organize it We can provide ”program tools” We can give you advice on your event •Pick a spot, visit the site to plan your event • Get permission from the property owner • Set a date and time and have a rain plan • Recruit family members, friends or neighbors to help • Get the trash bags you will need for a clean up, and the materials you will need for your beautification activities • Organize your “tools” and your resources • Divide the jobs according to ability • Make it fun…bring water, juice, soda and cookies • Give volunteers a big “THANK YOU” • Take “before, during and after” photos • Tell your newspaper, TV or radio station about your event • Call (Phone Number) and tell us about your event Event Safety Tips Wear gloves and thick-soled shoes Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts Wear sunscreen and bug repellent Wear safety vests for roadside events Don’t let your volunteers overdo it Drink plenty of fluids Don’t overstuff litter collection bags; never pick up hypodermic needles or sharp objects Wash your hands after the event Bag litter to meet local requirements Make sure your event site is tidy upon completion
