Neighborhood Story Project
Abram Himmelstein
In 2004, the Neighborhood Story Project was founded by Rachel Breunlin and Abram Himmelstein as a book-making
project based in the neighborhoods where we live and work. Following our mission, "our stories told by us," we work
with writers in neighborhoods around New Orleans to create books about their communities. The NSP is a
collaborative partnership with the Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans, and the University of New Orleans.

New Orleans Musicians Clinic
In collaboration with Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans and the LSU Healthcare Network, The New
Orleans Musicians Clinic provides access to health and social welfare services for the local music community. After
Hurricane Katrina, issues of housing, family, financial demands and emotional discord have become even more
evident for our musician patients.

YA/YA (Young Aspirations/Young Artists), Inc. is a non-profit arts and social service organization whose mission is to
provide educational experiences and opportunities that empower artistically talented inner-city youth to be

Young Audiences
Young Audiences/Arts For Learning is a non-profit arts-in-education organization that serves approximately 200,000
school children in Louisiana each year. Music, Theater, Dance, Poetry and Storytelling and Visual Arts programs are
developed to enhance and reinforce curriculum guidelines. Through participation, students gain knowledge to improve
academic skills and foster an appreciation for the arts.

community resources with staff and students through programs that respond to the particular needs of each school.
For 14 years, New Orleans Outreach has provided direct support to New Orleans schools through its site management
of various volunteer-driven programs.

Hands-On New Orleans
Since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hands On New Orleans volunteers have been at work every day to
assist in the cleaning and rebuilding of many of the city’s sections. Volunteers are still desperately needed to aid the
recovery process, and the Hands On action center in New Orleans will provide a starting point for those eager to make
a difference.

Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association (NENA)

The Lower Ninth Ward Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association (NENA) is a resident organized and resident
controlled community assembly. NENA exists to empower residents of the Lower Ninth Ward to play a vital role in our
neighborhood’s redevelopment post-Katrina.
The NENA Recovery Center provides residents with individual financial planning and housing assistance, is working to
establish an emergency preparedness plan and special needs resident tracking system, and runs a Neighborhood
Captain Program to encourage return, engage residents, and track ongoing needs. It is also in the development stages
of providing a workforce development, business incubation, and literacy program for local residents.

Mardi Gras Service Corps

The Mardi Gras Service Corps was created as a local community based response to the devastation caused by
Hurrican Katrina. Since its launch, tha Mardi Gras Service Corps has had the privilege of hosting more than 3,000
volunteers and has completed many successful projects. These projects include gutting over 100 houses and 11
churches, participating in neighborhood cleanups around the city and helping to rehabilitate numerous New Orleans
public schools.
Community Partner Projects
We have engaged many great organizations working in New Orleans. These partnerships have been very successful;
providing resources to the community that no one organization can do alone. These partnerships have produced
programs that include the Lower 9th Ward Community Center and Affordable Housing Management Program.

Sweet Home New Orleans (SHNO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing the music and cultural
community within the neighborhoods of New Orleans by helping our tradition bearers secure stable, affordable
housing. SHNO is a collaboration of service providers that connects New Olreans musicians, Mardi Gras Indians, and
Social Aid & Pleasure Club members to an array of resources.
