Following our mission, "our stories told by us," we work with writers in neighborhoods around New Orleans to create books about their communities. Volunteers are still desperately needed to aid the recovery process, and the Hands On action center in New Orleans will provide a starting point for those eager to make a difference. www.handsonneworleans.org Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association (NENA) Patricia Jones, Aliskajones30@yahoo.com 504-948-4544 The Lower Ninth Ward Neighborhood Empowerment Network Association (NENA) is a resident organized and resident controlled community assembly. NENA exists to empower residents of the Lower Ninth Ward to play a vital role in our neighborhood’s redevelopment post-Katrina. The NENA Recovery Center provides residents with individual financial planning and housing assistance, is working to establish an emergency preparedness plan and special needs resident tracking system, and runs a Neighborhood Captain Program to encourage return, engage residents, and track ongoing needs. Since its launch, tha Mardi Gras Service Corps has had the privilege of hosting more than 3,000 volunteers and has completed many successful projects. These projects include gutting over 100 houses and 11 churches, participating in neighborhood cleanups around the city and helping to rehabilitate numerous New Orleans public schools. Community Partner Projects We have engaged many great organizations working in New Orleans. These partnerships have been very successful; providing resources to the community that no one organization can do alone. These partnerships have produced programs that include the Lower 9th Ward Community Center and Affordable Housing Management Program.
