Epitome of William Johnson’s Will:
“Ffyrst I bequethe my soule into thandes of Almightie God … My
bodie I frelye yeld to the yearth, to be buried in the Churchie of
Barkebie…I give to my wyffe soe long as she kepythe herself
wydowe so much necarie rome as shall be thought neadfull in my
newe house at Barkebie… with the close and other land … orchard.
Also iiij kye, xxv. shepe, xxlb., and neccarie stuffe.”
To each of his children xxlb., a silver spoon and a “heiford.” To each
of his godchildren iiij. To Marie Foxe, daughter of John Foxe, one
dove. To repair the Stock well iij-iiij.

House and land in Barkby Thorpe to his wife Elizabeth.
To eldest son William, house and land “when he shall come to the
yeares of one and twentie.”
To Thomas, land at Kilby, 6 Horses, 10 Cows, 40 Sheep, farm stock.
To Richard, 5 Horses, 8 Cows, 40 Sheep and £100.
He must have died young, his eldest son not being of age; and his
wife lived 34 years longer.
His son Richard probably did not marry and by his will left money
and goods to all his relations, friends and servants: xxvijli. to Sister
Welldon; xli. Brother Thomas; xli. Uncle William; fortie pounds to
Sister Stanford; xli. Brother John; xli. Uncle Richard; many other
friends by name; clothes to the men servants; 4/- each to the three
maids; and lastly xli. to the poor of Barkby.

John Johnson lived at Barkby in the Manor House belonging to
Merton College. He was a large landowner and tenant of the College
land under 21 years renewable lease.
He was the John Johnson jun. Mentioned in the Merton College
records.
Circa 1662 Hearth Tax Rolls – John Johnson, Barkby Thorpe, taxed
for 3 fire hearths.
He left his property to his son Thomas in trust for his grandsons
William and Josias, neither of whom lived to inherit the property.

The bulk of his property left to John, the son of his nephew Thomas.
£400 to his cousin Ellen Stevenson, of ‘South Croson.’ Legacies to
John’s brother and sisters – ‘their Great Uncle,’ – and various
legacies to servants and friends.
“And the summs of ‘fourty’ pounds apiece to the six children of my
late nephew William Johnson, late of Thurmaston.
This William is frequently mentioned in the Merton College records.
At the Court Baron held 19th Charles II, William Johnson is styled
‘Juravit’.
He signed his copy (or deed) No 1679.
The signature is remarkably fine and clear, quite a specimen of good
handwriting.

Thomas Ross, yeoman, of Oadby, on the marriage of his daughter
Mary, conveyed the house in Shambles Lane, to two Trustees,
H.Cartwright, Oadby and John Woollridge, Barkby.
The house in St Nicholas’ Street where the family lived, was given to
Mary Ross on her marriage, by her father, Thomas Ross, Oadby. It
was the property of the surviving 6 children. The shares were bought
out by Stephen, the son of William, and is now (1898), owned by
John Smith, who has partly rebuilt the house.
Extract from the Freeman’s Roll Book, kept in muniment room,
Town Hall, Leicester. “Thomas Johnson, apprenticed to John
Davenport, of Quorndon, Hosier, made free Oct. 19, 1721.”
Ebenezer Johnson (Born 1730) married Ann Howarth.
Their daughter, Ann Johnson, married George Cowdell.
Mary Ann, the daughter of George Cowdell, married John Neale, of
Skeffington.
The son of John Neale was George Cowdell Neale.
The son of George Cowdell Neale was John Headley Neale, M.B., of
Leicester.

inscription:-

On her right lies Mary, their daughter, who died Oct. 18, 1773. Aged
3 years and 8 months.
The Father and Mother of Sally Chiswell are buried on the left of
their daughter. (See tomb stone G.M.)
