This William is frequently mentioned in the Merton College records. At the Court Baron held 19th Charles II, William Johnson is styled ‘Juravit’. He signed his copy (or deed) No 1679. Thomas Ross, yeoman, of Oadby, on the marriage of his daughter Mary, conveyed the house in Shambles Lane, to two Trustees, H.Cartwright, Oadby and John Woollridge, Barkby. The house in St Nicholas’ Street where the family lived, was given to Mary Ross on her marriage, by her father, Thomas Ross, Oadby. It was the property of the surviving 6 children. The shares were bought out by Stephen, the son of William, and is now (1898), owned by John Smith, who has partly rebuilt the house. Extract from the Freeman’s Roll Book, kept in muniment room, Town Hall, Leicester. “Thomas Johnson, apprenticed to John Davenport, of Quorndon, Hosier, made free Oct. 19, 1721.” Ebenezer Johnson (Born 1730) married Ann Howarth. Their daughter, Ann Johnson, married George Cowdell. Mary Ann, the daughter of George Cowdell, married John Neale, of Skeffington. The son of John Neale was George Cowdell Neale.
