Classix & Operatix Concerts and Recitals with Singers and Instrumentalists of Stature Francesca Canali Transverse flute Francesca Canali, an exciting young Italian flautist, pays her second visit to South Africa in February to perform two different concert programmes in Johannesburg and the W Cape, and to offer master classes. Canali is an eclectic and versatile musician based in Austria, from where she appears in celebrated concert halls and at prestigious festivals as soloist and in chamber music ensembles. She graduated cum laude in Rome, Paris and Salzburg under the teaching of top flautists like Irena Grafenauer. Canali’s doctorate on new perspectives in teaching and performing the flute has come to the fore in workshops, conference presentations and master classes. Her virtuosity has also regaled audiences in Europe, South and Central America, Japan, Russia and South Africa, and she has garnered numerous awards at national and international music competitions. An open-minded and inquisitive personality, Canali loves musical research, experimentation - and the discovery and performance of new flute concerti. Canali will be partnered by notable South African pianist and chamber musician Anneke Lamont, who regularly performs with top local and international musicians. Lamont is also renowned as a teacher, examiner, adjudicator, musical director and Imago therapist-life coach. She was the accompanist for cellist Alexander Ivashkin’s tour of South Africa in 2005; she is also a Unisa examiner and an official accompanist for their International Music Competitions. Her rendition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations - the subject of her doctorate – has received great critical acclaim. The first Programme is '800 Romantico’. Despite these composers’ important contributions to the development of classical music, some of their works have languished in obscurity. Audiences can look forward to pieces by Vally Weigl, Felix Mendelssohn, Bela Bartok, Olivier Messiaen, Sigfrid Karg-Elet and Erwin Schulhof, on Saturday 03 March at The Atrium at Wits, Johannesburg @ 20:00.
