Infection is a major theme at Imperial College London and there is an outstanding
track record of research in this area. The coming together of Imperial College London
and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust into the UK’s first Academic Health
Sciences Centre provides the unique environment in which to deliver the vision of
improving health systems and health care delivery to address the challenge of
Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI) and antibiotic resistance. This vision brings
together clinical, public health, academic and managerial expertise to drive forward
translational and applied research across secondary and primary care.
Job Context:
In 2008 Imperial College London was awarded one of two initial grants under the
UKCRC Translational Infection Research Initative. The award was to develop a
National Centre for Infection Prevention and Management (CIPM) to tackle the issue
of healthcare associated infection through a multidisciplinary programme of research
and teaching. The Centre is a close collaboration between Imperial College London,
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Health Protection Agency.
The Centre consists of 4 work-streams, innovation adoption and behaviour change, a
network in clinical infection, health surveillance across the healthcare enconomy and
capacity building through education.
This post supports the health surveillance programme of work.
Job Summary:
This post supports the health surveillance programme of work in work-stream 3 of
CIPM. This aims to develop and utilise infection surveillance schemes across whole
healthcare economy by finding novel uses for existing databases and developing
predictive models to identify individual at risk patients. This programme will
investigate information sources available and examine how data can be best used in
surveillance. It will explore issues around patient confidentiality, linkage, validation
and use of both internal databases and national datasets such as the mandatory
HCAI data reporting systems run by the HPA and other sources such as Hospital
Episode Statistics and mortality data and will result in a number of operational tools
for surveillance and management of healthcare associated infections. This role is
essential in supporting a range of projects within CIPM using such data.
An operational data-base and a research database have already been developed
bringing together large and complex datasets from across the Trust and driving a
massive expansion of the Trust Data Warehouse, as well as providing an invaluable
resource of data for research projects. The post-holder will be responsible for linking
additional data-sets to these databases and will continue to develop and optimise the
acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of this information for infection surveillance.
The post-holder will be required to work very closely with researchers and members
of the Trust Business Intelligence Unit and Infection Prevention Team including
clinical staff, in order to assess the information and knowledge needs of the service
and to further drive the novel use of these data-bases to enhance infection
surveillance. This may involve developing new reports and outputs for clinical use
including decision making and outbreak management.
The post-holder will carry out the analysis and interpretation of infection and risk
surveillance data and will also work with equivalent personnel at the HPA to conduct
similar work on national level data. The post-holder may also liaise with the
Education Manager developing training modules, databases and carrying out Quality
Assurance and Impact assessments of training.
