LEARNING ON MY DOORSTEP PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES:
How to develop, package & market education resources for the new curriculum
Learning On My Doorstep is an Arts Council England funded project coordinated by Surrey
Heritage and Surrey Museums Consultative Committee to support museums at a critical time of
change to the National Curriculum. As part of the project a Professional Development Series has
been developed to give museum educators in Surrey, Sussex and Kent the opportunity to review
their learning programmes, collections and learning offer in relation to the new curriculum, in order
to be prepared and maximise on the local learning potential. With each session building on the
last, the series aims to support museum educators to create, package and market their learning
resources and experiences with confidence as they begin a new dialogue with schools.
Please note – These sessions are free. Each session will run from 10.00am – 4pm with
registration from 9.30am. Refreshments will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.
Session 1 - Monday 8 September - Amberley Working Museum
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Understanding the Theory Behind Educational Resources
This session will establish models of best practice and help museum educators understand the
associated education theory, learning styles and critical thinking skills underpinning a good
educational resource no matter their background. It will assess a range of education resources
and work to identify the do’s and don’ts of creating quality learning experiences.
Session 2 - Monday 13 October - Horsham Museum
The Practical Process of Developing Education Resources
This session will help museum educators experience the creative thinking and problem solving
from learning with objects, to explore how to incorporate the theory from Day 1 into the practical
application of creating an appropriate learning resource or experience. Delegates will explore
learning and delivery styles, and ‘plan’ sessions for a range of learning ages and needs.
Session 3 - Monday 3 November - George Bell House, Chichester Cathedral
Pimp My Product: Branding, Packaging and Marketing Your Learning Programme
This session is a practical and theoretical review of the best way to package a learning offer.
Delegates will have an opportunity to explore a range of museum marketing materials and assess
what works and what doesn’t. The session will demonstrate good techniques and practical top tips
for page layout, design, images, text and how to manage on a shoestring budget. It will include the
importance of how learning materials are presented physically and virtually.
