Minimum of 3 years successful teaching experience at the middle/secondary level. Master’s work in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition and/or ELL methodology desired. Demonstrated understanding of academic language and how to develop it in English Language Learners. Training in the Language and Literacy framework as developed by “How Language Works”, an asset Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of curriculum standards and demonstrated experience in implementing MOE curricula. Understanding of essential outcomes. Awareness of current resources related to curriculum and ELL Demonstrated working knowledge of BC Performance Standards (numeracy, reading and writing). Demonstrated understanding of the ELL Standards and Proficiency Levels. Training in SIOP (Sheltered Immersion Observation Protocol) an asset. Demonstrated practice using co-teaching strategies. Demonstrated success using effective teaching strategies with an emphasis on the ELL learner. Demonstrated understanding of assessment as a formative tool. Evidence of teaching integrated curriculum and preparing teacher materials for ELLs Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction Ability to plan and conduct workshops as a staff developer/teacher trainer Demonstrated ability to use technology as a learning tool. Ability to work collaboratively with SWIS workers to help students from various language groups. Demonstrated ability to develop and teacher resources as needed. Good understanding of what constitutes a professional learning community pertaining to 21st Centuray skills A broad-based understanding of current educational research. Effective written and oral interpersonal skills. Self directed with strong organizational skills and good time management. Elementary/Middle/Secondary teacher training with training/experience in ELL. Practicum and/or experience at the Middle or Secondary level essential. Experience with international student programs an asset. Experience with international assistants an asset. Experience with IPT district ELL assessment desirable. Recent demonstrated successful experience providing ELL instruction for newcomers. Advanced coursework, diploma or degree in special populations (Aboriginal Education, Learning Services, English Language Learners, Social Emotional Learning) an asset. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning and the implementation of high impact instructional strategies. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize curriculum, learning spaces, individualized programs. Demonstrated ability to manage the changing dynamics of a classroom, or small groups of learners. Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal and communication skills. Must be able to communicate complex or sensitive issues in a positive manner. Demonstrated ability to manage themselves, learners and others in a conflict situation. Demonstrated ability to positively contribute to a team environment and a highly collaborative atmosphere. Demonstrated ability to engage learners at all levels. Demonstrated ability to use assessment as an effective tool for learning and charting progress.
