Please complete this brief proposal and submit an electronic copy to Claire Rammel@oakland.edu. □ merge programs □ split program □ rename program X modify program Effective Term/Year Fall 2014 Name of Current Program(s): MSN and Post Master’s Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia Name of Proposed Program(s): Same as above Department College/School- School of Nursing I certify that the above proposal has been reviewed and approved by the appropriate Department and College/School committees: Dept Chair or Director (signature) Date Dept Chair or Director (print) Dean of College/School (signature) Date Dean of College/School (print) DECISION OF GRADUATE COUNCIL Date 3/2007 Approved Graduate Council Modify Existing Graduate Program 1. List proposed program changes related to merging, splitting, renaming or modifying a program. 1.1 Current academic program(s) 1.2 Proposed academic program(s) to merge, split or rename. OR Proposed modification to current program (brief description): Add two credit hours for Advanced Health Assessment Courses (1 credit hour each for Advanced Health Assessment Part I and Advanced Health Assessment Part II) 2. Describe the reason(s) for the proposed change. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing published a document titled: The Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing. Within the section titled: Advanced Practice Nursing Core Curriculum, the following is mandated: ‘The content in the advanced practice nursing core must build upon the content included in each of the 3 areas listed as APN core. In order to ensure sufficient depth and focus, separate core courses should be developed for each of the 3 content areas defined as APN core: Advanced Health/Physical Assessment, advanced physiology/pathology, and advanced pharmacology.’ The current core for nurse anesthesia includes advanced physiology and advanced pharmacology. Advanced Health and Physical Assessment must be added. Additionally, the accrediting body for nurse anesthesia education programs, the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) mandates the addition of Advanced Health and Physical Assessment to curriculum for all nurse anesthesia programs by 2015. COA Standard III: Program of Study C15 * The didactic curriculum includes (3) separate comprehensive graduate level courses in advanced physiology/pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology. * all programs must meet this criterion by 2015 3. Current program(s) requirements. (admission requirements, program requirements, course offerings, delivery method and advising structure). Not applicable 4. Proposed change to the program. (admission requirements, program requirements, course offerings, delivery method and advising structure). The addition of Advanced Health Assessment I and II will increase the credits in the master’s curriculum from 56 to 58 and the post master’s certificate from 40 to 42. Students in the nurse anesthesia program pay a flat rate tuition each semester. For this 3/2007 Approved Graduate Council Modify Existing Graduate Program reason, there will not be an increase in the cost of tuition. The addition of these courses will not impact admission requirements or the advising structure of the program. The courses will be offered using traditional delivery methods. 4.1 Please provide a sample program under the proposed requirements. A sample of the revised curriculum design for the MSN and post master’s certificate in Nurse Anesthesia is attached. 5. Provide a list of all new courses and deleted courses. Identify and label the course as core, focus (concentration, depth) elective or exit requirement. Course Title Credits Prerequisite New or delete Identify Course XXX Advanced Health Assessment 1 1 each None Equivalent New Clinical core XXX Advanced Health Assessment II 1 each Advanced Health Assessment I New Clinical core 5.1 Do any of the courses being deleted affect other degree programs? No 6. If any resources needed (personnel, FTE academic, facilities or equipment) please provide budget. If no resources required, please provide a statement in the proposal. No additional resources are needed for the addition of these 2 courses 7. Funding sources: state sources, federal funds, and other funds as specified. Not applicable 8. If the program is professionally accredited, identify the accrediting body and discuss how the proposed change may affect accreditation. The addition of the Advanced Health Assessment course will keep the nurse anesthesia program compliant with current COA standards for accreditation. After this proposal has received all Oakland University approvals, the COA will be notified of the change. 9. Impact on current students, enrollment, time-to-degree, target audience, faculty workload, etc. There will be no change in time to attainment of degree. While portions of this content are currently being taught in other nurse anesthesia courses, content will be more comprehensive and more focused. A moderate increase in faculty workload is expected. 10. Provide explanation for how students enrolled in the program prior to effective date of any curriculum change may complete their program under old requirements – if so desired. The courses required must remain available, or suitable substitutions specifically designated. 3/2007 Approved Graduate Council Modify Existing Graduate Program These changed are not required until 2015. Currently enrolled students will not be affected. 3/2007 Approved Graduate Council Modify Existing Graduate Program
