Landcare Fellowship to the US in September-October 2009 –

Background
Australian Landcare International (ALI) finances travel fellowships to enable Victorian Landcare coordinators to go overseas to learn how Landcare operates elsewhere, to develop links with other
countries and to promote the Australian movement. Previous Fellows were Stephen Guy (NZ 2007)
and John Robinson (Virginia and North Carolina, USA 2008).

A minor change in the departure date may be required but it is very desirable that the Fellow arrives
in Kansas City on Friday25 September. Generally the Fellow will be billeted in US homes.
Conditions

Fellow to adhere to the planned schedule. Travel after the Rally will be amiably negotiated

Fellow to run workshops on Landcare as required during the tour, but especially at the LTA
Rally under Jerry Moles’ direction (1500-2000 people are expected to attend) – see

Fellow to send brief informative emails to the Australian organisers at least every week

Fellow to present a brief written and oral report on the trip at an ALI soiree in Melbourne in
mid December

Fellow to assist organisers with post-tour PR, aiming to get articles in statewide publications

Fellow to meet the funding group in person shortly before departure and shortly after return

All international and internal US travel will be paid for (Melbourne-Los Angeles return, Los
Angeles-Kansas City-Seattle-Portland) and Au $2000 spending money will be provided to
cover accommodation during part of the Missouri leg and hotel expenses in Portland –
arrangements after the Rally to be negotiated amiably, given the Fellow might wish to travel
privately down the West Coast to Los Angeles

Selection process
We are seeking a Victorian co-ordinator to run outstanding workshops at the LTA Portland Rally
in Oregon, as well as representing Victorian Landcare professionally, socially and technically in
the three other states.
As Ms Rita Mueller of South West Missouri RC&D will be in Melbourne on holiday in late May,
we will select a shortlist of three-four candidates, who will meet her for breakfast in South
Melbourne on Saturday 23 May between 8.00-10.00 am. Therefore applications will have to
close on 15 May and finalists will be informed as soon as possible after that. And the winner of
the Fellowship will be announced by mid June.
As the application period is unavoidably short, if you know likely candidates who are away,
please tell them what is happening so they can apply in time.
We confidently expect another Fellowship will be available in 2010.
