Synopsis on Clinical activities in Nephrology/ Dialysis/ Transplantation
(the synopsis must not exceed 3500 character –font 12, word format only-).
Our Service is the Nephrology department of Hospital Sant Pau and is affiliated with the “University Autonoma” of Barcelona . The service has :
Inpatient ward: 32 beds
Day Hospital: 20 patients/day
Out-patient clinic: (over 18000 visits/year)
Our medical team comprises 17 senior physicians and 8 residents, providing the following services:
CKD:
A very large cohort of patients are seen in the CKD and predialysis outpatient clinic
About 140 patients/year are included in renal replacement therapy
Dialysis :
Over 110 patients receive in-hospital HD, 250 in affiliated satellite units
Over 30 patients undergo peritoneal dialysis
Over 100 AKI patients are treated by a Nephrology-Intensive Care team
We perform apheresis techniques and immunoadsorption
Hypertension, cardiovascular risk, diabetic nephropathy and Nephrology
Primary Care
Outpatient clinic
Hypertension: 25-35 patients/week (patients with secondary and refractory forms of Hypertension, high vascular risk profile)
Diabetic nephropathy: (10-15/week) in tight connection with endocrinologists and
GP
Nephrology primary care: we solve basic nephrology problems with electronic support, Primary Care Centre Consultation and a large educational program
Techniques:
Ambulatory BP monitoring: nearly 20/ week
PWV and central blood pressure: (2-4 / week)
Brachial-Ankle Index: (2-4 / week)
Kidney transplantation
Over 80 /year KT (30 from LRD and 2-3 ABOi) are performed. Over 1200 KT recipients are followed up in the outpatient clinic .
We have a lot of experience working with extended criteria donors, nonheart beating donors, HCV+ donors,
HIV recipients, ABO-incompatible donation, cross-match + donation and pairedexchange donation. We have been the first centre in Spain using altruistic donors.
Inherited kidney diseases
We have a large experience in clinical management, genetic diagnosis and research on IKD. Genetic tests are ordered from hospitals all over the country.
Our work is based on: 1) nephrologist clinical diagnosis; 2) molecular genetic diagnosis, if necessary, in our laboratory; 3) information to the patient and personalized genetic counselling ; 4) clinical follow-up.
Around 500 patients with ADPKD, 80 with Alport syndrome, 15 with tuberous sclerosis and many with very rare IKD , or families with IKD of unknown origin are followed up. We treat with enzyme replacement therapy or follow up 13 patients with Fabry disease
Glomerular diseases
Over 100 native kidney biopsies/year are performed. A large cohort of patients with glomerular diseases, lupus nephritis and vasculitis are followed in the outpatient clinic
Kidney and urinary tract stones, tubulopathies
Specialist one stop clinics such as Pediatric nephrology, renal/systemic diseases, diabetic kidney disease, Renal/Liver, Renal/Myeloma,
Renal/Cardiology and CKD-MBD are part of routine clinical services
