August 2004 The Official Newsletter of the Cloudy Town Brewers July 2004 http://www.cloudytownbrewers.org Next Meeting Wednesday July 4 2004 7:00 P.M. at Granite City Food & Brewery From the Prez Hello Home brewers I don't know about you but I can't believe July has already come and gone. I just got back from a week at Sullivan's resort on North Long Lake to find that I am behind on the Clarifier. So here goes with what I have. I was in Baker's Craft & Hobby the other day and met Ray Scott. I offered to do a brewing class there in the fall. He was very receptive to the idea. We would basically do it the same way the wine classes are when they are held there. It is more of a brewing discussion and talk of how it is done, there is no actual brewing done at the class. I will check my work schedule and set a date probably on a Saturday. I also said I would like to get together with Ray and go over his inventory to let him know what I would like to see stocked and let him know what he will have a hard time selling. Ray told me he is not familiar with brewing and only purchases what his suppliers suggest. It seems to me they try to unload some slow moving products on him. I realize that baker's will never be a Northern Brewer or Midwest Brewing Supplies type of store but what I would like to see is a little more user-friendly homebrew supplier with a least the "basics". I was contacted by Community Education recently about the fall sessions. I told them because we had a better turn out in the winter session then the fall session. That we would pass on the fall session and would still do winter session. With Baker's class in the fall and the Winter Community Ed. we will be promoting home brewing and Cloudy Town Brewers in the St. Cloud area. "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." --Dave Barry." July Minutes Thanks to Granite City for hosting July’s Meeting. The Benton County fair is coming up and once again is having a homebrew competition. The Minnesota Home brewers are looking at the possibility of judging a regional section for the first round of Nationals. It would however conflict with some their existing events and Page 1 August 2004 they are looking at rearrange event schedules. . Inter-club Campout Its over… We lost…. CTB Embroidery holding on." --Dean Martin Ask Bruce This is a section in the newsletter devoted to you the Cloudytown homebrew club member to write in and ask our President (Bruce) questions you may have about brewing or life in general. This month’s letter comes from club member Mr. Richard Fader of New Munich and his question is: “Have you ever heard of a koozie being made for a 40 oz bottle?” Bruce Says: First off, I want to congratulate you for being the first person in existence to use the words “koozie” and “40 oz bottle” in the same sentence! Hey, do you really want to know why rappers dump some of the malt liquor out for their homeys? It’s because they know they can’t finish a whole 40oz bottle before it gets warm, so they had to come up with something roughneck so they wouldn’t look like sissies in front of their crew. Anyway, our good beer hearts felt you deserved a proper search and answer from us. A quick search on the ‘net yield a most odd find, I actually pulled up a 40oz koozie dealer who can help keep your heavenly 40oz cold for only $14. They even come in red, blue or black and a strap handle. Check this: http://elseware.to/products/koozie.htm -Stolen from somewhere. but I’m not gonna tell…. Submitted By Tim Fuerstenberg For anyone interest in getting our new/current Cloudy Town Brewer's logo embroidered onto their favorite garment, shirt, sweater or jacket (sorry they can't do hats), please bring your item(s) to our next meeting. The cost of the logo is $10 per item. If you need more information, please contact Tim Fuerstenberg. “24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not." --Stephen Wright You know you're a homebrewer if . . . Page 3 August 2004 If you own a stockpot big enough to bathe in. If you have moved clothes out of your closet to make room for more fermenters. If your child's science project is on fermentation. If you've ever got up to check an airlock in the middle of the night. If you have more refridgerators for beer than you do for food. If you plan your family vacations by which breweries you can visit. If you have more airlocks than the international space station. If you've tasted the finest commercial beer and said, "I can do better." If you have more kegs than your average 1fraternity. See you all at the meeting! Bring a friend they’ll thank you for it. (Bruce will buy you a beer, take your kids to the fair, buy them cotton candy, chili dogs, pizza, soda, burritos, pizza, cheese curds, let them ride the tilt-a-whirl, and clean up after them.) "Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." --Ernest Hemmingway Tid bits No German Beer At World Cup 2006 Munich, home of Oktoberfest, probably has a closer association with beer than any city in the world. So, Germans have been incredulous to learn that, when the opening game of the next World Cup is played in Munich in two years from now, thirsty fans will be drinking...Budweiser. No German beer will be served during the 2006 soccer World Cup, which runs from June 9 to July 9, 2006, in a dozen cities in Germany. Instead, FIFA, the world soccer governing body, has signed an exclusive sponsoring deal with AnheuserBusch worth a reported $47 million. Only Budweiser will be allowed to sell beer in or around World Cup stadiums. FIFA's explanation that Germany doesn't have a single, representative national brand isn't mollifying German beer lovers, who snarling that they wouldn't use Bud to wash their cars. The leader of the Bavarian Social Democratic Party has dismissed Bud as the "world's worst beer". Page 4
