Regain Health

Learn many herbs used by the Chinese for centuries to balance the body. Specific organ disharmonies and herbal tonics will be discussed as well as preventative health teas for season changes.

OCT. 23: Chinese Herbs to Calm the Spirit

For hundreds of years the Chinese have understood that you cannot separate the "Spirit or Shen" from the body. When disharmonies of the spirit happen, then physical signs and symptoms are exhibited. Anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia or even the inability to focus can be symptoms of a "heart" disturbance. This class will cover basic theory as well as herbs and formulas often used in Chinese medicine to help with these disharmonies of the heart.

This series can be used as an introduction to

Chinese Herbal Medicine. The cost of this course will be deducted from the year long Chinese Herbology course to start March 2002.

3 Thurs., OCT. 4,11,25: Qigong Workshop

w/Sandy Diamond

Sandra leads groups through the ancient art of

Qigong to provide tone and balance while removing energy blocks. Experience the flow of chi, your life force, firsthand and feel the healing energy in your body. Over the three weeks we will cover several Qigong forms and concentrate on breath work and moving in concert with chi. This class can make a profound difference in your experience of well-being.

Auricular Therapy

(Ear Acupressure) w/Arthur Shattuck

Saturday/Sunday, OCTOBER 13th & 14th

This will be the second time this subject has been offered at CIHS. This weekend offers diagnostics, treatment protocols, the traditional ear map as well as the maps of research neurobiologist, Terri Olesen. Point location is the key to good auriculotherapy. New location techniques and the use of electric and laser ear stimulators will be demonstrated and discussed. This seminar is for the student new to this form of therapy as well as students who have already been using the material.

Many drug and alcohol detox specialists learn this technique with successful results for clients addicted to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol. Ear seeds, magnets, gold and silver balls as well as tools for utilizing these treatments will be made available for sale.

Fri., OCT. 26: Himalayan Meditation w/Sandra

Diamond

This workshop will afford the opportunity to become acquainted with ritual and meditation techniques from this culture. We will experience sacred singing, Tibetan bowls and other objects. BIOGRAPHIES OF

INSTRUCTORS

MARY ALCO - Mary's extensive training in China on herbs, Tuina (oriental body massage) and QiGong is invaluable to her students and clients. Mary is in private practice utilizing her QiGong system of wellness and appointments are made through the school.

SANDRA DIAMOND - Sandra is the founder and director of Dragonfly, LLC, where she combines energy healing, Tai Chi and QiGong, spiritual journeying and counseling as well as hypnotherapy.

She is a graduate of the Institute of Healing Arts and

Sciences. She has traveled far and wide to study indigenous cultures and their healing practices.

Initiated as a Tamang shaman, on a mountaintop monastery in the Himalayans, Sandra brings an eastern approach into all her work. Currently apprenticing as a Toltec nagual (woman of knowledge), she has raised awareness of our interactions on a moment-by-moment basis and a guide for transformation, extremely powerful in healing. She has attended workshops with shamans from the rainforests of Brazil, Peru and Ecuador, absorbing techniques from those cultures as well.

Sandra was the Education Chair for the Greater

Hartford Holistic Association. Her corporate clients include Cigna, The Hartford, Limra, CT Women in

Healthcare Management and UConn Medical Center.

DEBRA FRANKLIN, LCSW - Debra is a licensed psychotherapist serving adults, children, families and couples in private practice in Newington. She is past president of the Greater Hartford Holistic Health

Association (now the Connecticut Holistic Health

Association), columnist for holistic health publications and regional lecturer on topics related to healing the

"self" in order to find the love and joy missing in one's life. Debra specializes in helping people find the love, joy or peace of mind/body/spirit that may be missing in their lives through a unique synthesis of healing approaches. Building on 14 years of experience, she integrates traditional and non-traditional counseling approaches. Blending her knowledge of the unconscious mind with energy fieldwork; use of chakras, imagery and dreamwork, her goal is to facilitate change as deeply and quickly as possible in mind, body and spirit.

NANETTE GINISE - Nanette is a licensed massage therapist in Connecticut and New York state with a private practice in Greenwich, CT. She integrates acupressure and traditional Chinese medicine in her massage practice as well. Nanette is a Western trained herbalist presently pursuing Chinese herbal knowledge. She also teaches acupressure at the CT

Center for Massage Therapy.

TONY(A) LEMOS - Tony(a) holds a Diploma as a

Natural Therapy Practitioner, which included certifications in Massage Therapy, Holistic Aromatherapy,

Reflexology and Nutrition from Raworth College of

Natural Medicine in Dorking England. Consequently,

Tony(a) has intensely studied herbal medicine with

Wise Woman and author Susun Weed and has recently completed a clinical intensive with Margi

Flint. Tony(a) sits on the education committee of

NAHA (National Assn. for Holistic Aromatherapy) setting the standards in Aromatherapy Education. She has been described as a playful, lively teacher whose classes are always entertaining and full of truths.

Tony(a) is the author of "Becoming Whole - an

Aromatic Journey to Wholeness" a 12 month aromatherapy homestudy program. Tony(a) teaches classes regularly all over New England and has recently accepted the position as Director of Blazing

Star Herbal School in Shelburne Falls, MA.

LINDA MASSELLI, MSW, LCSW - Linda is a Licensed

Clinical Social Worker beginning a private practice in

Newington and Middletown. She integrates her formal training with a continued study of Traditional Chinese

Medicine, Yoga, Eastern philosophies and meditative practice, seeking to bring mindfulness and spirituality to her practice. Her extensive research into the ancient mystical practices and beliefs of various cultures has led to a profound awareness of the

Goddess in history and the Goddess inherent in all of us.

KIM MERLINO, L.Ac.

- Kim has been studying and teaching holistic health for the past 25 years. He studied Diet and Nutrition and East West

Comparative Psychology at the Himalayan Institute where, in conjunction with N.E. Illinois University, he received his undergraduate degree. Graduating from

Five Branches Institute, Kim received his M.Ac. and

L.Ac. in 1990 and worked as an herbal consultant for

Kan Herb company in 1993 and 1994. For the past 11 years, Kim has been in private practice in Santa Cruz,

CA where he incorporates Traditional Chinese

Medicine, Nutrition, Shiatsu, NAET, TAT, Reiki,

Lifestyle Counseling and Meditation related practices into his client offerings. As an educator, Kim's love of teaching has taken many directions including TCM,

Yoga, music, developmental education in the public school system, kinesiology and Reiki.

LAURA MIGNOSA, C.C.H. - Laura is a Chinese herbalist in private practice as well as founder/director of the Connecticut Institute of Herbal Studies. She is a national lecturer on Chinese herbs and a professional member of the National Association of Teachers of

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NATAOM).

Continual training both in the U.S. and China helps make her an expert in her field. Laura has been integrating Chinese herbal medicine with John

Dempsey Hospital's Oncology Dept. since 1996. She has completed a seven-week herbal study on

Women's Issues at the Westside Hospital in Beijing and is a candidate for National Certification in

Chinese Herbology.

DEB POUECH - Deb Pouech is the owner of Herbs 'n

Honey in Stafford Springs, CT, offering herbal body products and raw honey. An herbalist, master gardener and apitherapist, Deb completed her herbal apprenticeship with Gail Ulrich and is a certified Bach

Flower Essence Practitioner. She continues her herbal education by attending classes with recognized herbalists at conferences and workshops. Deb teaches classes at local libraries, schools, garden clubs and wellness programs. President of Northeast

Herbal Association, and an active member of the

Connecticut Herb Association and Connecticut Master

Gardeners Association, Deb shares her joy in being involved in all things herbal with her classes and in her lectures.

ARTHUR SHATTUCK, NCCAOM, Physician of Oriental

Medicine - Arthur studied Chinese medicine in the

U.S., Taipei, Taiwan and Beijing, China. He returns to

Beijing to continue his studies in Auriculotherapy this

November. He has been in clinical private practice for over 12 years, a teacher for 6 years, and an author and national lecturer. Shattuck has developed many formulas for treatment for his patients and their pets including the herbal line known as PET THERAPY. A constant student in Traditional Chinese Medicine and always willing to share his vast clinical knowledge with his students.

The objective of this course is to teach the fundamentals of Chinese Medicine as well as the diagnostic principles for the therapeutic use of over 150 herbs and more than 35 Chinese herbal formulas.

Case studies, review of organ disharmonies, and clinical observation will be included. The preparation of herbal tonics and teas,

Tongue and Pulse diagnosis, as well as advanced GYN issues will be covered.

Herbal identification (samples of most herbs supplied), their tastes, formula structure, contraindications, as well as the acquisition of professional Chinese Herbal formulas will be addressed. Exceptional handouts provided. herbs and format will be introduced to enhance this learning experience.

March 16, 17 - SPLEEN DISHARMONIES: Herbs and forrnulas for digestive disorders. Chinese medical patterns of wet phlegm, acid reflux, diuretic issues, food stagnation, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and discomfort, as well as other middle burner issues will be addressed.

April 27, 28 - LIVER DISHARMONIES: Formulas and herbs for the Chinese medicine patterns of the Liver will include cysts, PMS, some GYN concerns, high blood pressure, migraines, emotional stagnation and hepatitis.

June 1, 2 - HEART DISHARMONIES: Herbs and formulas to calm the spirit and heart will be covered. Recent information obtained from clinical experience in Beijing will be covered. Emotional (Shen) conditions such as depression, anxiety, phobias, fears, manic depression are all part of a heart disharmony in TCM and will be addressed this weekend.

August 24, 25 - LUNG DISHARMONIES: Herbs and formulas to treat the western diagnosis of sinus infections, flus and colds, coughs, allergies, asthma and more will be covered. TCM sees this organ as our immune system.

September 28, 29 - TONGUE AND PULSE DIAGNOSIS: Fundamental Theory of Pulse taking, it's parameters, diagnostic skills and hands-on training will be covered. Tongue Diagnosis Theory will include the basis of color, shape, location, coating and movement of the tongue for TCM diagnosis. w/Arthur Shattuck

October 26, 27 - GYNOCOLOGICAL ISSUES: Common pathologies seen in the transition of a woman's body will be covered including menses irregularities, menopause, mastitis and cancers as seen in TCM. Formulas learned in China Hospitals will be shared. The theory of the Conception and Penetrating vessel will be addressed.

December 7, 8 - KIDNEY DISHARMONIES AND HERBAL TONICS: An overview of urinary tract pathology such as urinary tract infections, incontinence and yeast infections will be addressed. Kidney and other organ Tonic formulas to keep the body strong will be covered as well. Each student will prepare a warming Kidney Tonic and a Defense Formula Tea for use during the winter months.

January 25, 26 - BI-SYNDROME: This pattern treats pain in TCM. It includes the Western Diagnosis of arthritis, ioint pain, trauma and muscular pain. Differential diagnosis and herbs are covered.

March 8, 9 - CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS & OBSERVATION: Students will perform clinical differential diagnosis of patients and prescribe appropriate herbal formulas under supervision. w/Arthur Shattuck

Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory

Laura Mignosa is a Certified Chinese Herbologist who is both Western and China trained. She is the director of CIHS and travels yearly to China for study and to expose her students to the culture and clinical training of Beijing Hospitals. She has worked closely with

UConn Medical Center for over four years using the effectiveness of Chinese herbs for menopausal symptoms and breast cancer. Her private practice is maintained at the school where she treats all types of disharmonies.

Arthur Shattuck is a Physician of Oriental medicine for over 13 years, a Chinese Herbologist and author of "Treating Aids with Chinese Medicine" and other TCM publications.

Arthur also trains extensively in China as well as the U.S. while maintaining a busy private practice in Racine,

Wisconsin.
