The Music Makers’
focusing on classical music and musicians
in and around Crediton
Our first event will be on Tuesday, 9th July 2013
at Crediton Congregational Church
during Crediton Festival 2013
an invitation to musicians and music ensembles . . . .
Tim Matthews and I are hoping you will look favourably on our project, The Music Makers’.
We are aiming to provide a new platform for local musicians to perform music for an audience
in Crediton – focusing (though not exclusively) on classical music.
Please see our prospectus which explains the idea behind the project. We want it to provide a
useful service to musicians, audience, and the wider Crediton community.
If you would like to participate, please suggest items that you would be interested in playing along with information about the works and musicians involved. This will help us plan a series of
successful programmes.
A form is attached for this purpose – and for suggestions on developing The Music Makers’.
With many thanks!
Tim Matthews

The name is derived from a 1912 work, The Music Makers, by Sir Edward Elgar, based on Ode, a poem by the Irish
poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy. Its first stanza is:
The Music Makers’ – prospectus
a new platform for musicians in and around Crediton
Drawing on musicians’ own repertoires we intend to develop a series of musical events, providing
funding, hospitality and other services - including hire of a grand piano.
Our core focus is on classical music performances, but the programme may include, for example, jazz,
folk, or ethnically diverse items, experimental pieces, or works by locally-based composers. We aim to
endeavour a stimulating visual and aural experience within an entertaining social environment!
Musicians and groups are invited to submit items from their existing repertoire, or to suggest new pieces
to rehearse with a view to performance. The enjoyment of the audience is an essential consideration, and
every effort will be made to make the events attractive to young people as well as to adults.
Performance opportunities are aimed primarily at adult musicians who are likely to have studied music to
an advanced level, but we also invite talented junior players who can work alongside adults.
We will build a database of musicians, groups, supporters and other interested parties, and will support
the project with a website with links to associated musical activity locally.
The events are intended to be self-funding, with revenue derived from ticket sales, sponsorship from
businesses, from sales of informative literature and food & drink. Ticket prices will reflect the aim of
attracting a broad audience.
In promoting affordable concerts that require significant organisation and financial outlay, the project
does not envisage making payments to performers. However, it reserves the right to offer expenses to a
visiting concert performers who would normally expect to receive a professional fee.
Grants from local authorities and other organisations will be welcome. Local businesses will be invited to
contribute items for a Draw in aid of outreach projects, in return for publicity within Programmes. We
would like to raise funds for introductory piano lessons for all school-age members of Crediton Learning
Community.
The Music Makers aims to work in partnership with local organisations such as Crediton Town Council,
Crediton Learning Community, churches in Crediton, Crediton Arts Centre, CRAMP (Crediton Rural
Arts & Music Project) the St Boniface Concert Society, CODS (Crediton Opera & Drama Society),
PIANO (Pianos in Accessible New Outlets), and The Crediton Courier.
The Music Makers is a project of: Paul Vincent – publisher (www.thomasdunhill.com) and founder of
