GUIDELINES FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL GENETICS TEACHING AWARD
2013-2014 Basic Science Teaching
Purpose: To recognize excellence in teaching in both basic science and clinical areas by members of
the Department of Medical Genetics.
Awards will alternate between basic science teaching and clinical teaching each year.
The Department Teaching Award Committee will be comprised of awardees from previous years. This
committee will determine the recipient of the Department’s Teaching Award for the current year and will
determine whether the recipient should be further nominated by the Department for the following
teaching awards:

Faculty of Medicine Killam Teaching Award (for basic science or clinical teaching)
Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (clinical teaching)
Career Award in Clinical Teaching (clinical teaching)
Eligibility for Nomination for a Department Teaching Award:
Anyone with a primary clinical, tenure or tenure track appointment in the Department of Medical
Genetics: http://www.medgen.ubc.ca/homepage/faculty.htm

Instructor, Assistant, Associate and full Professor, including faculty with Partner Institution
appointments, and faculty with joint appointments with other Departments.
Associate Department members are not eligible.
Expected Nominators for the Department Teaching Awards:
Basic Science Teaching
Department Head
Faculty – as per those eligible for the award
Medical Genetics MSc and PhD students
Postdoctoral Fellows
Chair, Medical Genetics Graduate Program
Clinical Teaching
Department Head
Faculty – as per those eligible for the award
Genetic Counselor students
Residents and Clinical Fellows
Program Director, Genetic Counselor Program
Program Direcor, Residency Program
Areas of Assessment:
Basic Science:
• Lectures and other teaching – undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
• Supervision of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
• Participation in thesis supervision and examination committees.
• Participation in organization of seminar programs.
Clinical:
• Supervision of a clinical practicum for: Medical Genetics Fellows, Residents, Genetic Counseling
Students, Medical Students.
• Teaching Medical School and Genetic Counseling Masters Program courses, lectures, tutorials,
practical sessions, or other formal type of teaching.
• Supervises or participates in the supervision of students doing a directed study project, a
graduate thesis, graduate examination committee, etc.
• Provides lay and professional seminars, CME’s (CME, workshops and/or presentations.
• Teaching of other students in various other academic settings, i.e. undergraduate programs,
School of Nursing, BCIT, etc.
Assessment may be based on different criteria for Basic Science versus Clinical awards.
Criteria:
• Peer review by award committee and faculty.
• Student evaluations, particularly graduate students, post-doctoral and clinical fellows.
• Undergraduate student evaluations.
• Evidence of a sustained contribution over time (past 3 years and more)
• Commitment (lecture and contact hours per day)
