Fitzpatrick Family from Cork
My Jeremiah born about 1798, was living at Mallow in County Cork before coming to Australia as shown on his
immigration card.
I have found from an 1821 Census of the townland of Droumcarra, Parish of Iveleary, Barony West Muskerry, Cork the
following family of Fitzpatricks.
Cornelius 35 yrs, farmer (born 1786)
Ellen 23 yrs, wife
Cornelius 1 year, son
Jeremiah 24 yrs, brother (born 1797)
James 23 yrs, brother. (born 1798)
The above Jeremiah at 24yrs would make his Date of Birth 1797. This coincides with my records for our Jeremiah's birth
date. I have assumed that Cornelius, & James are my Jeremiah's brothers.
Jeremiah and Eliza (nee Connolly- some records do mention Connely) Fitzpatrick migrated to Australia from Cork, Ireland
in 1838, with their children James Patrick Fitzpatrick 15 yrs, Jeremiah 14 yrs, John 10 yrs, Thomas 4 yrs, Catherine 12 yrs,
Julia 7 yrs, Timothy 18 yrs, Mary 20 yrs. The Immigration card showed that Timothy and Mary, because of their ages,
were also listed seperate to their parents. Some said that Jeremiah was considered a 'gentleman' due to his financial
standing and as such the family paid full fare to sail to Australia. They may however been assisted immigrants.
The immigration card also gave details of the parents of Jeremiah & Eliza and advised that the family arrived on the ship
"Calcutta" on 16th October 1838 in Port Jackson, Sydney. The boat left Cork, possibly from the port of Cobh, on 29th
June 1838 and was listed as an Immigrant ship
My direct ancestor Thomas, was 4 years of age when his father Jeremiah came to NSW Australia from Ireland.
It is interesting to note that a Margaret Conelley, was a bride in 1818 at St Marys Church at Mallow. She probably married
a Pattrick Fitzpatrick. (Mallow Historical Society). Margaret died in 1848 and was buried at St Marys Church.
Jeremiah did farm work at Quirindi in New South Wales and, in the early or middle 1850s the family came to Tamworth,
and farmed along the Armidale Road. On 4th May, 1859 he was appointed a Bailiff for Tamworth by the Northern
Districts Court. He did not appear to have remained in Tamworth very long but three of his daughters married local men. I
have not been able to find a record of Jeremiah's death, although his wife Eliza grave is in the Tamworth Cemetery. There
is space either side of her grave, so it is possible that he could have been buried there also. His death is not recorded in any
state of Australia, in official records.
I recently visited Cork, .Ireland for a week but was unable to find any further information, during this short stay.
Researching from Australia is very difficult, and any information or leads, would be very much appreciated.
