susanaldridge2000@yahoo.de susan taylor aldridge weimarische str. 12 10715 berlin, germany The descendants of Samuel Morgan originate in larger Gloucester County which over the years shrank to what it is today. The descriptions by early historians what the first settlers found here are magnificent and startling. From Raccoon Creek to "Makles" Creek, now known as Mantua Creek-which is the land in this precise area--we are told that tobacco grew luxuriously. There were great quantities of walnuts, chestnuts, peaches, cypresses, mulberries, fish trees, and many other rare trees. John Fenwick left England in 1675 before the division of East and West Jersey occurred, sailing on the ship Griffith with a group of Quakers who settled at Salem Co. . William Penn did not leave England until seven years later. In 1677 and 1678 five other vessels with 800 emigrants, mostly Quakers, arrived. A large number disembarked at Raccoon Creek near Swedesboro and others proceeded farther north and settled at Burlington, originally called Beverly, then Budlington, and finally Burlington. Friends Meetings were held in Burlington in 1677 in tents. A Quaker Meeting House was built in Salem in 1680, and in Burlington in 1682. At this point proprietary interests in West Jersey were to a large extent in Quaker hands. The type of government which developed in all of New Jersey was extremely liberal. In fact it was considered later by the Crown of England to be revolutionary. The capital of West Jersey was fixed at Burlington, and an Assembly was convened there in 1681. These early New Jersey colonial governments, asserted, 100 years before the American Revolution, substantially the same principle of sovereignty of the people themselves, which was later set forth in the Declaration of Independence. Gloucester County for many years extended entirely across the State and included all of Atlantic County and all of Camden County. The territory now in Atlantic County was not separated from Gloucester County until 1837 which was 151 years after the founding of Gloucester County. Camden County was not created until 1844.Seehttp://www.nj.searchroots.com/Gloucesterco/gchistory.htm Camden, Swedesboro, Evesham Mount, Mount Holly, Woodbury, and Salem are just a few of the South Jersey towns that were stops on the Underground Railroad in the 1860s. On their way to freedom, slaves passed through these towns on their way from Philadelphia to New York. New Jersey was intimately associated with Philadelphia and the adjoining section in the underground system, and afforded at least three important outlets for runaways from the territory west of the Delaware River. Our knowledge of these outlets is derived solely from the testimony of the Rev. Thomas Clement Oliver, who, like his father, traveled the New Jersey routes many times as a guide and conductor. The third route was called, from its initial station, the Greenwich line. This station is vividly described as having been made up of a circle of Quaker residences enclosing a swampy place that swarmed with blacks. One may surmise that it made a model station. Slaves were transported at night across the Delaware River from the vicinity of Dover, in boats marked by a yellow light hung below a blue one, and were met some distance out from the Jersey shore by boats showing the same lights. Landed at Greenwich, the fugitives were conducted north twenty-five miles to Swedesboro, and thence about the same distance to Evesham Mount. From this point they were taken to Mount Holly, and so into the northern or Philadelphia route. This is version 7 of George Morgan Descendants. This month I have added information from death certificates from NJ archives which was obtained for me by Eugene Wills of NJ. Please destroy the Word doc from last month, as you promised to do upon receiving this new one. As I do have corrections as usual. This is not an all inclusive work. There are many names who are not here and additions and corrections are most welcome. There are probably hundreds of Morgans whose names have been forgotten and I delight to find new onew which can find a place here. This paper started with a basic small outline from Leslie Karpolorich which I found on the internet. I try to support the information and I add children thru census material and other data. When evidence indicates otherwise, I state it. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/a/r/Leslie-M-Karpolorich/GENE100001.html?Welcome=1076235097 My paper has become 10 times the original size by adding historical information, census data-especially from 1880, names of other children, will information, emails with Bible information, marriage data from Glouceter Historical Society, internet sites and my own comments. Some of the descendancy is incorrect and I say so, but leave it in. A group of Morgans I have added to the 3rd generation, but I am not sure of the parentage. That is Philip and Abigail Morgan and their possible children. This is a paper I am working on and is by no means without mistakes. Sometimes I make stupid mistakes, so do not be afraid to write me . If you have other information, please inform me. I have added my own Morgans at the bottom without knowing where or if they fit in to the George Morgan descendancy, but my great grandfather was called (Sidney) George Morgan and according to my great Anna Franklin Morgan, was related to Captain George C. Morgan of Mantua-maybe a cousin in some way. Last month I corrected Peter Morgan (he had only one marriage, not two), due to an email from a descendant of Peter Jessup Morgan whose parentage I do not know at this time. I read once that a wagon train of Morgan related families left PA/NJ in 1837 and headed west. His son Thomas Cheesman Morgan was born in Millville, Gloucester, NJ 8 March 1837, so the wagon train must have left after that date. His younger brothers and sisters are born after that between Illinois and Iowa, and Peter Jessup Morgan himself dies in Nebraska. Some of his children die in Oregon. The LDS info for this family is near the end of this paper. Descendants of George Morgan Generation No. 1 1. GEORGE1 MORGAN was born 1708 in Glou. Co., N.J. Quite a few members of this family left for the west on the wagon train which left during the year called the Panic of 1837. The rendevouz point for Philadelphians and Gloucester Morganrelated families was west of Harrisburg in the spring.. A wagon from the Army Medical depot at Philadelphia went to Harrisburg to join the train.. .The first starting point had been Long Island but the Rendevous point for people coming from the South was Independence, Missouri. On the way to Independence, the train went thru Wheeling, West VA and Cincinnati, Ohio, following the Ohio River. The promise if you joined the wagon train was 200 acres of land in Oregon, papers to be signed at IndependenceAt Independencethe offer was enlarged to 600 acres because the government felt with the original offer of 200 acres, speculators had been weeded out by not offering 600 publically. Some of the wagon families had gotten off and bought land which suited them along the way though and never found out about the 600 acre offer. His brother Isaac married Mary Otto at the same time. Bödo Otto Jr., was surgeon in the Continental Army. I think some of this family went to Indiana after 8 March 1837 (after Thomas Cheeseman Morgan, was born in Millville, Gloucester, son of Peter Jessup Morgan, born 10 May 1800, who went west with wife Hannah Jane Cheesman, b. 25 Dec 1812 ) and before 1840. Margaret Otto as well as Maria, her stepchild, went with the Morgans west. Bodo and Peter stayed in NJ. I believe I read that around 1837 30 Morgan families from NJ and PA made a wagon train thru Ohio and on to Indiana and points southward. Beckett 11 George Morgan 69 Henry a black with no last name 21 Susan, I have to admit, I found your e-mail a bit confusing, but that's okay. I've been working on my Morgan family for a little over 25 years now. Only recently did I make a breakthrough, partly with the discovery of some new information that my mother, who died in 1987, had written down back in high school about her family and it ended up with my aunt's family. My great-grandmother was Alice Belle Morgan, daughter of John and Catherine (Hahn) Morgan. I found a family bible which listed John's parents as George and Patience Morgan. The newly uncovered information from my mom had John's full name as John Otto Morgan. I am pasting a copy of what I wrote in my research notes to remind me how I determined John's ancestry: This is how I determined that John Otto Morgan was the son of George W. and Patience (Eacrit) Morgan, and that George W. Morgan was the son of Jonathan and Margaret (Otto) Morgan. The following comment appears in John and Catherine (Hahn) Morgan's family bible: "Died on the 17th of February 1887, John Morgan, son of George and Patience Morgan. Aged 66 years, seven months and 25 days." This put his birth date at 22 June 1820. I then went to the 1820 New Jersey census index and found that there were only two George Morgans living in New Jersey that year. Contacting historical societies for both counties, I found that the George Morgan from Gloucester County had married a Patience Eacrit. This George Morgan was living near a Bodo Morgan. With the help of a cousin I discovered over the internet, I found both a George Washington and a Bodo Morgan baptized at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey, with Jonathan and Margaret Morgan as their parents. Also in church records, I found a Jonathan Morgan marrying a Margaret Otto in 1796. According to research by the Otto Family Association, Margaret was the brother of Bodo Otto, Revolutionary War doctor. This would explain John Morgan's middle name (Otto) and his uncle having been named Bodo. Okay, that's how I figured things out. I have since found a book titled, A History of The Family of Morgan, From The Year 1089 to Present Times by James Appleton Morgan, that has Jonathan Morgan in it and traces his family back to the 16th century. Mind you, I am a very cautious genealogist. I have to make sure my information is well-documented before I add it to my family tree. I am currently looking for a source to back up what the book says, although it does seem to be well researched. According to the book, Jonathan's father George was the brother of Sarah Morgan, Daniel Boone's mother. I hope you have found this information useful. I'm not sure if I could add more to this or not, but now is not a good time for me. Some other things are preoccupying my brain. 13. ii. ANANIAS (5) NELSON (ancestor of Hanna Nelson who married Bodo Morgan-susan) Ananias Nelson, died in Salem County, before May 22, 1812. NJ He may have been a soldier in the Revolution (in the same class as Artis Seagrave), Oct. 20, 1777 (NG55), but on September 15, 1778, Inquisition proceedings were instituted against him charging him with being a Loyalist. Such proceedings were usually based upon an affidavit of an official or of neighbors. The proceedings were not always pressed to judgment (NJA, 2nd. ser. 2:470; LNJ 255,296). No advertisement for the sale of his property, and none for creditors to present claims have been seen (NJHSP 1961:75). Ananias was a witness to the will of Benjamin Maul, of Hopewell, Cumberland County, on August 13, 1776 (NJA 34:341). He was at Pine Tavern in 1778, 1780, 1789, 1797 (CSB 142). (An Ananias was in the census of 1790 in North Carolina.) On December 14, 1799, 42 acres belonging to Ananias, in Pittsgrove, adjoining John Mayhew, Esq., deceased, and John Ellits, were sold by the Sheriff to Champneys Rambo, pursuant to a judgment and execution obtained by Artis Seagreave (SH 177) in the Common Pleas Court. The deed was dated March 26, 1800 (UD #674). This land was #3 in the Division of the land of Abraham Nelson (3) at Maple Grove. On January 9, 1800, John Hutchinson made a deed to Ananias Nelson for 80 acres (plus), pursuant to which 80 30/100 acres near Pine Tavern, in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County, adjoining Wade Mulford, John Hutchinson, Joseph Stokes, and Isaac Ivins, were on April 26, 1804, surveyed to Ananias, and approved August 9, 1804 (WJ AA:276). Ananias having died intestate, on May 22, 1812, Abraham Nelson was appointed administrator of his estate, the bondsmen being John Keeper, et al (SS A:97). Ananias left children: i. Abraham Nelson(6), wife Mary; ii. George Nelson (6), wife Susanah; iii. Ananias Nelson . On March 21, 1828, Abraham Nelson obtained a quit claim deed from George Nelson, one of the heirs of Ananias of all of George's estate in lands in Salem and Gloucester County. The deed was acknowledged by a witness, Sept. 4, 1835; and on April 20, 1828, Susanah Nelson, of Chester County, Pa., widow of George, released her dower unto Abraham Nelson, of Gloucester County (SC SS:36, 39). On July 9, 1830, Abraham Nelson (6), and Mary his wife, of Woolwich Township, sold to Joseph Lewis, 13 acres in Woolwich Township, on the Stage Road from Bridge Town to Philadelphia, adjoining Wm. Money, being part of a tract which John Mixner had sold to Annanias Nelson, who died intestate, whereupon the land descended to said Abraham. Witness was Samuel Nelson (GD A3:356). On Sept. 2, 1834, Abraham Nelson (6) and Mary, his wife, of Woolwich Township sold to Charles Wood, 1 acre set off to Ananias Nelson by Commissioners, December Term, 1800 (SC QQ:45). On Sept. 16, 1830, in the Village Herald of Woodbury, Abraham Nelson published a notice directed to Justices of the Peace, etc., not to marry his daughter, Hannah, to Bodo Morgan. (Bodo was a son of Jonathan Morgan, and a grandson of George Morgan, says John D. F. Morgan, Esq.). Hannah (7), nevertheless, married Bodo Morgan, probably in 1830, and died by 1842. The heirs of Abraham Nelson (6), children, no doubt, were: i. A??ariah (7) Nelson, who, on Nov. 9, 1854, sold to Joseph Jessup, 8 acres in Harrison Township, adjoining Samuel Porch and Samuel Duel, which Wm. Elwell, administrator of the estate of Abraham Nelson, had sold to Azariah, Feb. 3, 1852 (GD Q4:325). ii. Joseph, iii. Mary (7), wed Wade Mulford, iv. Patience, wed Charles Commings, v. Hannah, wed Bodo Morgan. Hannah (Nelson) Morgan, and Bodo, had but one child: i. Abraham N. Morgan (8), born August 14, 1831. Bodo Morgan having wed (2), in 1842, Rhoda MaGague, they conveyed to Abram N. Morgan, of Franklin Township, on February 23, 1845, 30.50 acres in Franklin Township on the road from Whig Lane to Hardingville, adjoining Bodo's other land and the Ecret survey (GD R4:101). Bodo left a will probated April 1, 1869. Executor Abram N. Morgan, who qualified (GS F:366). Abraham N. Morgan (8), married Margaret Butler, and had three children: Wealey, Hannah, and Anna Corinda (Carr). Abraham N. died March 2, 1915, and Oscar E. Carr, grandson, was appointed administrator on April 5, 1915 (GS E:123). On December 5, 1857, the above heirs of Abraham Nelson sold to Joseph Paulin and Wm. L. Cross, all their rights within a survey on Reed's Branch made to Sears (Sears Cedar Swamp) (GD U4:137). On August 21, 1835, Susann Nelson, Chester County, Pa., Frederick Fisher and Elizabeth, his wife (nee Nelson), of Philadelphia, and Hezekiah Nelson, and Matilda, his wife, of Chester County, as heirs of George Nelson (6), conveyed two tracts in Pittagrove Township to Jonsthan Burroughs (SC PP:600); and on Aug. 25, 1835, Susan Nelson, Chester Co., Pa., Frederick Fisher and Elizabeth (Nelson), his wife, Phila. Co., Hezekiah and Matilda Nelson, Chester Co. sold to Jonathan Burrough, 1.05 acres in Pittsgrove Township, and 20 acres in Woolwich Township, which descended from Ananias to George. George died intestate, the grantors being his heirs. Witnesses Jos. H. Atkinson, et al (GD N3:312). Samuel Nelson (5) of Pittsgrove Township, made a will, dated Jan. 4, 1796, in which he gave to his wife, Elizabeth, 2 horses, 3 cows, and the grain at the Tavern Place (Pittstown), "and at my other place"; gave to his mother, Keziah, the house "where she now lives" and 1/2 acre adjoining, etc.; devised to his daughter Mary Nelson, land adjoining Samuel Elwell's land, etc.; devised to his two sons, Joseph and John the "place where I formerly lived, adjoining Joseph Van Meter's land"; devised to his son, John, a 6 acre lot South of Judah Foster's land and an 18 acre field adjoining Joseph Van Meter's land; and other lands to Joseph and John; etc. He authorized his executors to sell the Tavern Place, and pay the profits of his lands to bring up the children until they became of age. The executors named were Elizabeth Nelson and Benjamin Champneys, who at the time of the probate, had "long since" died. The witnesses were Benjamin Robinson, Rebeckah Hughs, and Jedediah Dubois. The Will was proved by Rebecca Hutchinson, late Rebecca Hughs, on April 10, 1839 (43 years after it was signed), and Joseph C. Nelson qualified as administrator c.t.a. (SS D:225). An inventory was filed Sept. 19, 1839 (SS E:104). The children of Samuel (5) and Elizabeth Nelson were: x x i. Rebeckah, born October 9, 1781; ii. Elizabeth, born August 11, 1784; iii. Mary (6), born Nov. 17, 1788, married David Sithens; iv. Joseph Champneys (6), born Aug. 12, 1791, mar. Ruth Sithen; v. John, born August 25, 1793; vi. Samuel, born July 16, 1797. (Supplied by Mrs. Dale H. Learned from Bible record; and she sent a list of progeny). Mary Nelson (6), born 1788, married David Sithens. They had son, Benj. C. Sithens (7), married Salome Hitchner. Had ?? children: i. Malcom Sithens(8), mar. Texaswoman. Had daughter Queenie; ii. Spencer Sithens, married (???), no children; iii. Samuel N. Sithens, died single; iv. His wife stopped at a friend's house, where she was to remain until all the household goods should arrive, and the deceased, after kindling a fire in the range of the new house, determined to sleep in the room, but unfortunately he turned off the damper in the range, thus forcing the coal gas into the apartment. A police officer entered the house yesterday morning, after being informed that Mr. Morgan had not made his appearance, and found the deceased lying with his faced turned towards the floor, his head resting upon his arms, quite dead. An inquest was held, and a verdict in accordance with above facts rendered." courtesy of James P. Morgan "MORGAN - Suddenly on the 25th instant, BENJAMIN R. E. CYRIL SCHUYLER HARRISON FRED BOWERS ALICE MORGAN June 24, 1895 Arapahoe CO ALICE MORGAN September 24, Arapahoe 1896 CO New Chapter How do Abigail Morgan and Philip Morgan fit into this family? There is a question mark about Philip and his wife Abigail Morgan: This is the generation which would probably have included Phillip Morgan and his wife Abigail if Philip is descended from George Morgan. They were married before 1796 because there is a death cert. for Christopher Morgan which has Phillip Morgan and his wife Abigail as his parents and he is born 1797. I will include the census information here which I have gathered about an Abigail who is living as a widow in Mullica Hill, Mantua for many years. When I first discovered her she was not indexed and was living next to John M. Morgan with her Morgan name dittoed under his.. The family below is possibly the family my great great aunt Ann Franklin Morgan said were our Morgan relatives transporting goods on the canal boats (probably Durhams) between Trenton and Philadelphia before the Civil War. Christian and sons are listed as “waterman” which must mean working on the water. Carpenter's Landing- now called Mantua, was then a place of active business in cord-wood, lumber, and ship timber, employing many sloops and small vessels in the trade. http://www.10crucialdays.org/html/durham.htm “These craft were able to travel down the river through its many shallows because when fully loaded, they drew only about 24 inches of water. They were able to travel against the current and through the treacherous rapids up the Delaware River because when partially loaded with a cargo of about 2 tons, they drew only about 3 inches of water Durham boats played an important part in Washington's Crossing of the Delaware on December 25, 1776. Washington wrote to Governor Livingston of New Jersey, directing him to secure "Boats and Craft, all along the Delaware side... particularly the Durham Boats" for his anticipated crossing. General Washington had, no doubt, observed these stable vessels, painted black, at the docks in Philadelphia and understood that they would be ideal craft to transport troops and supplies for his surprise attack on Trenton. After the Revolution, these boats continued to haul vast amounts of cargo up and down the Delaware River between Philadelphia and points upriver above Trenton until the Delaware Division of the Pennsylvania Canal was completed in 1832. Merchants like Mahlon Taylor (of Taylorsville, now Washington Crossing, PA) accumulated wealth hauling upcountry resources down the Delaware River in Durham boats to the prosperous markets in Philadelphia.” PHILIP MORGAN NJ -Gloucester County Greenwich Township 1840 PHILIP MORGAN NJ Gloucester County Greennich Township 1850 A younger Phillip b. 1813 is listed in the 1850 Greennich Gloucester Co.census, but I cannot find him although it states he is there . Christian Morgan married Sarah Morgan- since they have a son Peter. It could be Peter b.1813 is a brother to Christian. Christian was born 1795. Benjamin is said to have lived in Moorestown, NJ for a short time, but he did live in Blockley, Philadelphia 1850 and Springville (Spring City), PA 1860. then Honeybrook, PA, and Grays Ferry Road, Philadelphia for at least one day. He worked at the Arsenal during the Civil War, but do not know where he lived. His grandfather Morgan (father of Asdam Morgan) is said to have fought in the revolution in the NJ Line Regiment called 3 M. under Elias Dayton , his grandmother is Sarah Flanigan/Flaningham. Her parents were said to be Michael Flanigan/Flaningham and Sarah Jennings. "DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION - Mr. Benjamin Morgan, of Chester County, rented a few days since the house 2542 Grays’s Ferry road which had been recently finished, and on Wednesday came to the city, with his family, to take possession of it. An inquest was held, and a verdict in accordance with above facts rendered." Phil. newspaper "MORGAN - Suddenly on the 25th instant, BENJAMIN R. E. Adam’s 2 daughters who were milliners (Louisa B. Morgan Moore and Maria B. Morgan Burns) had to join in and help, as well as all members of their families. Even the Pinkertons moved back from their farm in Penn, Sterling, Wayne, Chester Co. to Philadelphia by 1870- probably to help at the factory. Her husband Samuel was left alone on the farm. Benjamin’s daughter Alice was listed as a sales lady at the store next to the factory in 1880. Grandfather Benjamin Morgan left Philadelphia and went to Spring City, Pa. (by 1857 where he is on the tax list that year), where he was an engineer for Springville paper mill. With the Civil War he returned to Philadelphia and became an engineer at Frankford Arsenal (where he worked with Benjamin W. Morgan who is half owner of the cemetery plot at Mt. Moriah Cem. at the hub of the big circle plot 42 98E1/2- in Philadelphia, see cem. Map below. Benjamin W. Morgan 1840: laborer, US Arsenal, no address listed , Benjamin W. The store was already for opening and Grandfather decided to spend the night in the store before the opening. The store had a coal stove which was lit, but because the damper was not open, he was found dead the next morning near the window and having been asphyxiated by coal gas. Uncle Irvin James Morgan was born 6 months after his father’s death. The Leach family in England were master dyers. Grandmother Leach had the formulas of the dyes but destroyed them all, said aunt Frank and Sidney George Morgan. Grandmother Hannah Leach was born in Dublin, Ireland while her father and mother were travelling. He went to the cities (probably Manchester and Dublin) and mixed dyes from his formulas for the manufacturers. Aunt Frank told Laura that the Morgans had canal boats on the old canal between Philadelphia and Trenton at one time. (Before the Civil War?). Ruth Dorothy Morgan told James Taylor III that the Morgans are related to the founder of Morristown, NJ. But did she mean Moorestown? Mother Jean Gould Morgan’s side. Her mother: Anne McKay – of Bally Tor, Antrim near Bally Meana, Scotch Presbyterian (I think she means Ballintoy? And McCay with a C is the spelling on the birth cert. And the marriage cert.) Married John Gould/Gold 30 October 1863, Ballintoy, Antrim, Ireland. Anne (pronounced Anna) McKay’s sister Jane married John? Steel (a Ballintoy name also) in Philadelphia. Son James Steel died as a young man, around 1899 or 1900. Daughters: Jean Gould b. 20 November 1864 -0100, Croagh District, Ballintoy, Antrim, Ireland. Katherine Gould b. August 1866 and came “as a babe in arms” on a sailing ship from Ireland according to James Taylor III’s notes. She married 1st Unknown Goodman DAUGHTER Ethel Goodman Married about 1906 Clarence Watson Son: Clarence Watson 2nd Joseph Carson Daughter Josephine Married John Billingsley on Memorial day in Maryland Children Jack (John),Joan, Jeffrey Note: written into the lease of the farm where grandmother Anne McKay Gould lived; “As long as the grass grows and water flows This farm shall belong to the McKays.” Grandmother McKay had a brother (brother in law she means?); believe his name was William. He had a daughter Mamie Gould. He married a second time and had sons William and Jay Gould. (According to James Taylor III, John Gould had a brother Hugh Gould. He had a son William and a sister Mary living with him in 1880 in Kensington, near the carpet factory. In 1890 he is listed as a carpet maker in the Philadelphia directory.) __________________________________________________________________________ 1780 Samuel Tomlinson to Mary Bates. Peter Jessup Morgan His descendant says, “ Hello, my name is Rosanne Empey. I am researching the line of Peter Jessup Morgan, born 1802 in Glouchester, New Jersey. I found your information on the George Morgan line on the Ancestry board. Very interesting! I would like to figure out how my Peter Jessup Morgan figures in, perhaps a cousin. Anyway, I think I can help you correct some information. On your page of genealogy you list a Peter Morgan, (son of Jonathan and Margaret Otto Morgan)" born 1817 in N.J., and died June 15, 1908 in Glassboro, Glou. Co., N.J.. He married (1) HANNAH H. CHEESEMAN March 12, 1835 in Glouc. Co.. N.J.. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (2) SARAH JANE MOORE November 13, 1841 in Glouc. Co.. N.J.. She was born Unknown, and died January 19, 1885 in Woodbury, Glouc. Co., N. J.. " My ancester Peter J. Morgan, (I have no names for his parents at present) married Hannah Jane Cheeseman March 12 1835 in Glouc. Co. N.J. I have the information on this Peter, and Hannah, and their family. Could it be possible, then , that your Peter only married Sarah Jane Moore, and had the family as you record? I have attached a gedcom of my Peter, Hannah, and their family. They moved west in 1836, to Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Oregon. I hope this helps you, and would be glad to hear from you further on this line. JONATHAN H. MORGAN Residence: 1860 Monroe Township, Camden County, NJ ? Jonathan H Morgan Residence: 1 June 1840 - Hot Spring, Gloucester, New Jersey ? i also have other info from people i have met on the internet that are researching there relatives like us. there is not a lot of info. on my john excerpt from a catlett family bible stating that he married a sally in n.c. his family bible stating he was b.1784 in n.j. and the names dates and places of his children, the mother was left out for some reason. [lodoisky morgan catlett was in the first bible i told you about.]she was my gggrandmother johns daughter. i have pension papers from the indian wars on her second husband g.w.catlett. this line comes from my mothers side. but there is very little info. on john, let me put all of my info. that i have on the morgans together and get back to you. i must have 2 or 3 large notebooks of papers i have collected on just the morgans. i will get back to you soon. thanks pat hi susan, i found a few things in my notes that i wanted to tell you about. , i have a book on american prisoners of the revolution and it has the names of 800 men taken prisoners by the british in pa. and placed on a boat called the old jersey the dates in the book range from 1773 to 1776 there were 5 morgans in the list they were abel morgan , henry morgan, john morgan, joseph morgan and matthew morgan. it dosent say what happened to any of them some prisoners didnt make it through they died on the ships. i think i read someplace that abel made it out and went home to die. also you said you have a david listed as a son of james and eleanor , i have a david listed as the son of james and jane no b. date but he died in 1694 . the book i mentioned above is one that i saw in the family library it is a hard to find book but i got lucky and found it on the internet. it is a very interesting book it tells all about how all the american prisoners were treated on these boats and churches the punishment was unbelievebly cruel. on johnathan morgan . johnathan was my samuels brother and johnathan hill morgan was samuels nephew also daniel morgan was kin to daniel boone by sarah morgan . Her father is said to be john morgan (james brother) . and also in my notes [ not proven ]kit carson is kin to daniel boone. have you heard any of this? there is also a john hunt morgan [see attached image-susan aldridge] that is believed to be related to daniel morgan . i have books on him also. they say he is a cousin. also there is a nancy hart a heroine of the revolution they seemed to be all tied together in one way or another. i'll write more later , pat barbara thank you for your message, i kinda knew that samuel was too young to have married charity vansant i just couldnt find any info on it . i also saw the charity you were talking about while i was researching for my samuel. like i said before the samuel i am searching for had a son john my line, who was samuel jr's brother and it also stated that johnthan was a step brother. i know a wanda morgan coats that decended from johnthan she sent me a lot of info on the family. her family records said samuel was decended from james and elanor morgan.and she said it was proven through her line.i know there are different versions and no one knows for sure. maybe one of these days we will come up on something to prove it. terry, i have the same names on my decendents chart i have several more names . i also have a old and rare library book that i ordered on the internet that is the life of John Hunt Morgan written by his brother in law maj. Basil W. Duke. Basil was married to Johns sister Henreitta and was also Johns right man on his raids through kentucky and elsewhere. the book is a old library book the 2 page is stamped murray state college it has a copyright 1960 by indiana university press manufactured in the united states of america library of congress catalog number 60-8607 you have stated . the book was dedicated to the noble women of the south. on pg. 18 chapter 2 states that john hunt morgan was born at huntsville alabama on the first day of june 1825 his father calvin c. morgan was a native of virginia and a distant relative of daniel morgan the rebel general of revolutionary fame. and he goes on. then i have a book on daniel boone by john mack faragher the live and legend of an american pioneer . on pg.27. it says younge Boones namesake , his mothers older brother was a traveling quaker minister. and as he was talking about sarahs older brother he states [quote.] "like his Uncle Daniel Morgan, Boone now guided his family toward the unknown. i also have a Morgan Morgan on my chart comming from William. that first settled in Va. Daniel morgan of Rev. fame decended from this line. i believe very strongly that they are all related James and Jane morgan the first to come over to the new world had a grandson Cadwalder Morgan [i believe this to be Edward] i have read where Cadwalder is a name for Edward. I do intend to study this further and i hope i can find the documents to prove this. Cadwalder may have had brothers that came over with James and Jane. which may have been James Jr. and John, sorry this is so long. i hope it gets to you. Pat Another line Pat, hopefully I can help with some of the things you are reading about John Hunt morgan, Daniel Boone, etc. there have been many stories about General Daniel Morgan being related to Daniel Boone, none of which have been proven. I have seen claims that Daniel Morgan was his cousin, his uncle or his nephew. None proven. Daniel boone was the son of Squire Boone and Sarah Morgan. This particular Sarah Morgan was the daughter of Edward Morgan of Gwynedd, PA. This family is well documented and there is no proven connection at this point to Daniel Morgan. There is a gentleman named Stewart Baldwin that is a descendant of this family and has written many papers documenting the lineage. Most of his work is available on the internet if you do a search. As far as John Hunt Morgan. He was a Confederate general who was born in Huntsville, AL and moved to Lexington, KY as a youth. My gg grandfather claimed to be his second cousin, although, again there is no proof. John Hunt Morgan was also reported to be a lineal descendant of General Daniel Morgan, again no proof. John Hunt Morgan's line is as follows: William Morgan b. 1556 m. Cwladis Morgan b.1558 William Morgan b. 1585 d. 1648 m. Elizabeth Morgan James B. Morgan b. 1601 d. 1685 m. Margery Hill Capt. James Morgan b. 1645 d. 1710/11 m. Rachel Deming James Morgan b.1680 d.1721 m. Bridgett ? James Morgan Jr. b.1707 m. Mary Averill Samuel Morgan b.1728 d.1815 m. Rachel Kibbe Gideon Morgan b.1751 d.1830 m. Patience Cogswell b.1754 Luther Morgan b.1776 m. Anna Cameron Dodd b. 1779 Calvin Cogswell Morgan m. Henrietta Hunt General John Hunt Morgan Hope this helps. Terry Morgan Here is a southern branch of the Morgan family who stem from NJ.Thomas Gibbes. Thomas was born on his grandfather estate in Princeton,Mercer Co., NJ. Morgan had a brother Morris Morgan and they bote immigrated to LA Household: a Samuel Morgan who was born in PA but moved over to work on the Delaware with perhaps the other Morgan families who were working canal boats.
