2010-2011 ICAN PROGRAMS CAMPUS Barton College PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Involves enhancing campus programs that focus on assisting firstgeneration and at-risk students; includes campus visits, mentoring programs, and interaction with Barton alumni inspired by faculty/staff, and by academic and co-curricular programming. TYPE College Access /Academic Advising Belmont Multi-faceted approach to student-driven success through the Guided Abbey College Planning for Success project or GPS; includes college access programs, advising, tutoring, mentoring, and external training. This program is offered to all students of BAC and area middle and high school students. College Access, College Success & Academic Support/Advising Bennett College for Women Total Academic and Personal Success (TAPS): An enhancement to the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT), designed to provide programs that will increase success for at-risk, first-year students. This initiative is a 17-week activity assisting students through tutorial services for general education courses such as mathematics, English, science, foreign languages, history, and writing-intensive courses. College Access, College Success & Academic Support Brevard College Student Success Program targeted toward students who have completed one or two semesters at the college with a 2.0 or 2.4 cumulative GPA and are typically deficient in a variety of areas including but not limited to time management and basic study skills. College Success & Academic Support Cabarrus College of Health Sciences College outreach and mentoring program that increases college access of underrepresented students to higher education opportunities in the health profession by identifying and training current successful students who serve as Ambassadors. College Access Campbell University Involves expanding the tutoring center available to all students but tutoring services opportunities will likely target first-generation, lowincome or students at risk of educational failure, as well as students requiring disability accommodations. College Success/ Academic Support Catawba College Program designed for first generation Early College students; includes tutoring, peer mentoring, and study skill enhancement opportunities. The Catawba Acclimation for Transfers Seminar (CATS) is a matching fund partner and 15-20 Early College transfer students participate in a contentladen three credit hour orientation course designed specifically for them. College Access & College Success /Academic Advising 1 2010-2011 ICAN PROGRAMS Chowan University First Flight Program designed to orient underprepared incoming freshman to the culture of higher education by learning basic study skills in four academic areas: humanities, mathematics, English, and the sciences. College Success /Academic Support Davidson College Research In Science Experience (RISE) is a program for rising sophomores who are underrepresented minority students in science as well as firstgeneration and low-income students. This summer program involves students learning basic research techniques in order to carry out a group research project. College Success Elon University A program dedicated to assisting students’ transition into their freshman year of college. Students participate in an on campus writing prep course and an ongoing afternoon writing workshop to support the development of their writing skills. Emphasis is placed on academic, leadership and social transition skills. College students design and implement program plan. College Success/Summer Enrichment & Academic Advising Greensboro College The Partnership for Academic and Cultural Enrichment Program (PACE) is designed to provide a support system for students of color by providing activities and services necessary for their academic success and persistence. College Success Guilford College First Step Scholars (FSS) is geared to first-generation students to keep them connected to resources on campus and engaged with greater community; includes peer mentoring, social and academic activities, and workshops. College Success Johnson C. Smith University Involves faculty-student interaction and student interaction into campus life through mentoring program. Also, the initiative creates availability for textbook vouchers to the students. College Success Lenoir-Rhyne University Involves strengthening academic success skills through workshops, and a weekly Study Hall program. College Success /Academic Support Louisburg College Aimed to serve GEAR UP groups from across Central and Eastern North Carolina, the program allows students to tour the campus, attend a mini class led by Louisburg College faculty member and student assistant, and dialogue with current students during Q & A session, etc. College Access & Academic advising 2 2010-2011 ICAN PROGRAMS Mars Hill College Currently enrolled students are trained to mentor new first-generation students and prospective students. Additionally, printed resources are developed to be used as educational material and recruitment material for students and their parents; includes trained students speaking during orientation. College Access & College Success Meredith College Multi-faceted program that engages students and their families in a number of social and academic activities in a holistic approach to developing a family support system that understands the challenges of adult students in pursuing their education. College Access Methodist University MAAP Summer Academy is designed to equip at-risk students with the College academic and social tools necessary to make a transition from high school Success/Summer to college. Students enroll in English 100 class and are provided a variety Enrichment of different sessions focusing on life, social and academic skills ranging from study skills, time management, getting involved in campus organizations, conflict resolution, etc. Enhancements include increased number of personal skill building sessions, lower mentor to mentee ratio and improved collaboration among departments. Montreat College The Student Success program is enhanced academic support services; includes tutoring, peer mentoring and study skills enhancement opportunities. College Success/Academic Support Mount Olive College Involves making advising resources accessible to all students, in order to equip new students with the tools needed to make sound academic and curricular decisions. College Success / Academic Advising NC Wesleyan College Freshman Advantage (FA) supports 65 conditionally admitted students. Students participate in reading and writing prep courses and academic skills workshops on campus; program includes peer mentoring, and intense advising. College Access & College Success/Academic advising Willliam Peace University The program has three interconnected components: upper class students serve as student success consultants to first-year students; first generation and/or minority first-year students receive book scholarships or international travel grants; and the program will provide support to first-year students in order to improve their GPA and become involved on campus. College Success 3 2010-2011 ICAN PROGRAMS Pfeiffer University Pfeiffer is using a multi-modal approach to increase low-income and firstgeneration student persistence through leadership development. Involves students participating in a peer leadership academic course, workshops, and the enhancement of fundamental skills such as mathematics, reading, study skills, and writing. College Access, College Success / Academic Support St. Andrews Presbyterian College Two programs: An enhancement of the current Cornerstone program and a new summer program called JUMPSTART. The Cornerstone program serves first year students with identifiable academic challenges. Students participate in a College Success class and mandatory, monitored study support. The enhancement involves students working with peer academic success coaches. Also, St. Andrews will provide a week-long summer “boot camp” to admitted first generation students or students with a high school GPA below 2.0. College Success/Retention and transition focus & Academic Support /Advising Saint Augustine’s College Summer Bridge program to enhance proficiency in fundamental skills such as mathematics, reading, study skills, and writing. College Access & College Success/Transition Program Salem College The Salem Leadership Connection is a program that trains students from College Access Salem College to speak to high school girls about how to be successful in preparing for and attending college. Participants will be 25 Salem students from underrepresented groups to be facilitators and visit organizations, give presentations about their college experience, and host students on the Salem College campus. Shaw University Summer Bridge program to provide academic and social support network by building a student learning community; includes mentoring and tutoring to high school students. College Access/Transition Program Wingate University Summer Bridge Program targeted at assisting incoming freshmen students who are first-generation students and students with low financial family income; includes leadership development and the opportunity to enroll in a three credit course, English 100.
