Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics Fall Dinner Meeting Thursday, November 13, 2008 Modern Maturity Center Featuring Dr. Keith Mellinger – University of Mary Washington Teaching Our Students to Think Students need to learn how to solve problems. In order to do this, problems must be presented in the classroom setting so that the students have the opportunity to think. This presentation from Dr. Keith Mellinger will focus on the challenges and benefits of problem solving courses for students at a variety of levels. Dr. Keith Mellinger, Associate Professor and Chair of Mathematics at the University of Mary Washington, earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in mathematics from the University of Delaware, after receiving a B.S. in mathematics from Millersville University. Dr. Mellinger has been teaching for 13 years and has taught problem solving courses to all levels of students. He has also directed many undergraduate research projects where students are exposed to previously unsolved problems. Professor Mellinger has also taught classes to teachers, focusing on problem solving skills and exposing the teachers to problems that require outside-the-box thinking. Dr. Mellinger has been the recipient of many internal grants and a Jepson Fellowship from the University of Mary Washington. He is a Project NExT fellow through the Mathematical Association of America. He was awarded a young investigator grant from the National Security Agency in his research in finite geometry and coding theory. He has delivered professional presentations throughout the country and in Greece, Italy, and Canada. Dr. Mellinger has been published in a variety of mathematical journals. He is a brief/script reviewer and a mathematical content consultant for CyperChase, an educational television show for children ages 8 through 11. 5:00 P.M. – 5:45 P.M. 5:45 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. 7:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. 8:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M.
