Program Description:
This program is a special opportunity to take online courses at Capital High School using APEX. The course you are taking is being
offered as a credit retrieval class for courses once previously failed. This special online opportunity is only offered to Capital students
in need of credit retrieval in order to graduate on time.
Some considerations:
1. A student may only be enrolled in one online course at any given time. Once a student finishes an online course they will be
eligible to take another one.
2. Each course will be equivalent of a one half (.5) credit.
3. Juniors and seniors in need of an additional credit retrieval courses within a single semester, will need to meet with the instructor,
coordinator and counselor.
4. Important: This course will be monitored daily/weekly by the site coordinators. It is important for you to understand that all of
your activity (logging in/out; time spent; activity scores; quizzes; etc.) within your online coursework is being monitored here at
Capital. It is important to remain on schedule and be satisfactorily progress in order to remain in the course.
a. On Schedule (defined): You must complete assignments prior or by the computer generated due dates; you
must not fall below 70% in the "On Schedule" category located within student progress report. Logging
in daily or the equivalent of 5 hours (minimum) a week is expected.
b. Satisfactory progress (defined): remaining above the 70% mark in the "Quality of work" at all times. Each quiz can be reset by
the student up to three times. After the 3rd failed quiz, the student must show work for that section (study guides completed). Tests
will only be reset one time. The 2nd test will be the final grade for the unit.
5. APEX courses will be graded as Pass/Fail at the completion of the course/semester.
6. Non progressing APEX students may be required to come into Capital High School before or after school or work at home in order
to get caught up.
7. Students enrolled in APEX are expected to work on their classroom assignments while in class and will need to make reasonable
progress towards the completion of the course on a daily basis.
8. Students will follow all school policies including the sections regarding no cell phone and personal music devices due to
maintaining testing and learning integrity. If seen, heard or used, it will be confiscated and removed to the front office and only
available for pick up from the building principal after a brief conference. If the course has an audio portion to the instruction, you
will need to supply your own set of headphones.
9. You are required to complete a semester's worth of work by the end of the semester in which you are currently enrolled.
It is the sole responsibility of the enrolled student to make certain they are making "Satisfactory Progress" and are "On Schedule" at
all times. The student can be withdrawn (at the teacher and coordinator discretion) if the above conditions are not met.
Revised 2/4/11
Getting Started:
1.
Use the provided "username" and "password" to access your coursework.
2.
Make sure you go through the "orientation" in the tools section whenever you're confused about how to proceed. (Most questions
will be answered there.)
3.
All testing (diagnostics, tests and quizzes) must be proctored by a Capital High School instructor. You may not take a test
with another person's assistance. If testing with a teacher other than your regular instructor, you will need to provide photo
identification and have it available throughout the exam. While testing, you are not allowed to leave the testing room. If an
emergency arises, the test will be terminated and you will need to reschedule. You are allowed three opportunities to take each
quiz; other opportunities require proof of study guides, notes and instructor approval. A student is only allowed to take a test
twice and a diagnostic one time.
4.
You can "test out" of any unit you feel competent in by taking the "diagnostic" and earning a minimum of 80%. There is no
penalty for failing a diagnostic. It will simply help you understand what you need to work on to improve. Diagnostics must be
proctored and taken at the beginning of the unit.
a.
Diagnostic excusing breakdown: Gaps = individual unit lessons/sections with a score of less than 70%
1. Hooray! I've mastered this!
1. 80% Diagnostic average, WITHOUT gaps = move on, skip the unit
2. Good job, but a bit of work to do!
1. 80% Diagnostic average WITH gaps = fill in the gaps, then move on
3. Acceptable work. Let's prove it!
4. 70% Diagnostic average WITHOUT gaps = take the unit test as well
5. I get credit for what I know.
1. 70% or lower diagnostic average WITH gaps = fill in the gaps and take the unit test.
5.
If your course requires discussion or brainstorm or any other interaction expectation, meet with your instructor to make
arrangements.
6.
Read all new announcements posted at the "My School" page each time you access your account.
Once you get going:
8. Make sure you ask a Capital High School teacher immediately if you have any questions (not answered in the "orientation" or
"tools" sections) regarding the navigation of the program.
9. All the information necessary for the successful completion of the class can be found within each unit (in the "Tools" section). If
you need someone to help explain the information to you, consult a teacher from the content area (if applicable). Otherwise ask the
building principal.
10. When you have finished all required work and exams you will be provided with a transcript from your teacher.
Make sure you use the resources provided in order to ensure a successful experience.
Good Luck!
