Job Description SYSTEM DIRECTOR, NURSING INFORMATICS Department: Quality & Patient Safety Improvement – Clinical Informatics Grade: 026 Location: System Support, FLSA: Exempt POSITION SUMMARY The System Director of Nursing Informatics will report to the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) with a secondary reporting relationship to the System Senior Director of Nursing Excellence. This position is primarily responsible for the leadership, consultation, and coordination of clinical nursing informatics and integration of those processes with system-wide clinical information technology strategies within _. This position also provides system leadership for nurse informaticists, Chief Nursing Executives (CNEs), and other clinical/ancillary leaders and associates in the development and implementation of computerized clinical applications. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Leads and facilitates clinician, IM, and operations advisory groups to provide broad-based input into the design and enhancement of clinical systems to support excellence in patient care, clinical transformation, optimal productivity, and outcomes analysis. Is able to effectively influence in a multi-disciplinary, multi-region/facility/program system. Applies clinical process transformation methodology to develop, implement and evaluate clinical information systems development as well as measurement and evaluation of patient care outcomes. Coordinate with IM and Finance/Revenue/Case Management to ensure efficient, effective communication and work that meets financial requirements. Serves as Liaison for Nurse Informatics Associates, Clinical Standards Team, and appropriate committees for the purposes of ensuring coordination in planning, development, and implementation of clinical applications and the promotion of best practice/best evidence. Implements processes for ongoing content management of best practice evidence-based workflows, order sets, forms, and other documentation tools that will meet minimum requirements and will be consistently applied throughout the system. These should be designed to enhance measurement of and compliance with key clinical indicators, core measures, regulatory requirements, and metrics to determine outcomes and effectiveness of the care and services provided. Leads assessment of needs and implementation of strategies to link practice guidelines to practice-based electronic medical records systems, including recommendations on future direction for health care informatics within the organization. Identifies Associate education and competency needs in the use of electronic tools for patient care. Assures the development of an appropriate education and competency validation plan. Ensures policies and procedures are developed and updated as necessary to coincide with clinical information systems usage. Leads design teams to facilitate visionary, out-of-the-box thinking throughout workflow processes. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, and private laws and regulations for all states in which corporation is present in relation to clinical documentation and electronic medical records. Provide leadership in the development and/or revision of initiatives or programs related to data collection, retrieval, analysis and interpretation to assist in optimizing patient outcomes and/or effectiveness and efficiency. Develops tools to support CQI activities and communicates and updates as needed – assure decisions are reflective of team decision-making and contribute to the creation and integrity of a longitudinal patient record. Understands and articulates the “connections” and links between and throughout department work related to Meditech and other clinical applications. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A. Education/Skills RN with Bachelors Degree Excellent written and oral communication skills Prior successful leadership and operational experience. Familiar with information systems, clinical software, and other computer applications. Prior experience and knowledge of Meditech functionality is desired. Familiar with regulatory requirements and standards Advanced Analytical and Statistical skills Highly professional, well-organized Research skills Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Must work well with others. B. Experience In-depth, advanced clinical base of knowledge as normally obtained through an Advanced Clinical Degree and five or more years of related clinical and operational experience. 5 or more years of experience with clinical information systems with a working knowledge of network systems and a wide variety of experience with computer applications. 2 or more years of experience in managing performance improvement activities, including analyzing clinical workflow processes.
