Eginition Hospital, Neurogenetics Unit, Athens. Medical Studies with the distinction “Excellent”, “La Sapienza” Medical School, University of Rome, Italy RESEARCH ACTIVITIES For the last ten years I have been head of the Athens Neurogenetics Unit. The Unit has clinical and scientific expertise in inherited neurological disorders and has systematically provided clinical assessment, genetic counseling and molecular diagnostic services at a national level since 1995. It is the only unit of its kind in Greece and has been a reference center for several neurogenetic disorders, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Huntington’s disease, Friedreich’s ataxia, Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA), Kennedy’s disease and myotonic dystrophy. It has the largest clinically characterized cohorts of patients with neurogenetic diseases at a national level. From a research perspective, our unit has focused on the study of inherited neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s, Charcot-Marie Tooth, myotonic dystrophy, hereditary ataxias and ALS. Genotyping of disease causing mutations in known genes, genotype-phenotype correlations and population studies are our main scientific directions. Present projects of my team are focused on: Genotype-phenotype correlations in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Genetic epidemiology of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in the Greek population Genetic modifiers in Huntington Disease Biomarkers in Huntington Disease Genetic epidemiology of Hereditary Ataxias RESEARCH GRANTS Participation in international grants as collaborating investigator: 2 Participation in national grants as collaborating investigator: > 10 OTHER RESEARCH RELATED ACTIVITIES Member of the Greek Neurological Society and the Greek Society of Medical Geneticists Reviewer of Research Grants for the grants: “Developing new treatments for CMT1X neuropathy”, “A study of the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and a therapeutic trial of Idebenone in the mdx mouse model of DMD.” Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics Telethon Grant Evaluation November 13, 2009 Reviewer for the Journals: Neurological Sciences and Neurocase Co-editor of two Greek Neurological Journals: Neurology (1992-2003) and Selections in Neurology and Psychiatry (1994-2012) >60 invited lectures at Neurological Conferences and Seminars in Greece TEACHING ACTIVITIES Postgraduate teaching: Supervisor of three PhD Theses and one MSc Thesis Coordinator of postgraduate teaching in neurology for neurology residents at the Department of Neurology, University of Athens Medical School (2002-2009) Organizer and instructor in educational workshops on “Educating medical educators” and “Introduction to educational techniques” (2000-2010) Organizer and instructor of neurology trainees in ‘Seminars in small groups’ (since 2001) Lectures in Clinical Neurology and Neurogenetics and other clinical teaching of neurology residents at the Department of Neurology, University of Athens Medical School (2002-2012) Coordinator and lecturer in three Postgraduate Programs organized by the Department of Biology and the Medical School of the University of Athens: “Applications of Biology in Medicine”, “ Molecular Medicine” and “Clinical Neuropsychology” Organizer and instructor in yearly postgraduate ‘seminars in small groups’ for Greek neurologists, organized by the Department of Neurology, University of Athens, within the framework of Continuing Medical Education Undergraduate teaching: Lectures in Clinical Neurology, fifth-year Medical School students, neurology attachment (2002-2012) Lectures in Genetics and the Nervous System as part of the course “An introduction to the neurosciences” (2002-2012) Clinical teaching by the bedside, fifth-year Medical School students, neurology attachment (2002-2012) ACADEMIC PUBLICATIONS Textbook chapters/ handbooks (Greek) 9 International research publications Scientific articles (Scopus) Articles where first author (Scopus) Articles where last author (Scopus) Mean journal impact factor Total Citations h-index Abstracts from international meetings 55 12 8 3.4 >380 10 51 Greek research publications Articles in Greek journals Abstracts from Greek conferences 25 37
