The Missouri History Museum is accepting applications for a non-paid internship in our
Library and Archives department. The available positions are as follows:
Digital Archives
Spring 2009
The intern will be responsible for scanning documents, entering project metadata into the digital
collections database, uploading images to the digital assets management program, and other
duties as assigned. The Missouri History Museum Archives is currently digitizing several
important collections with the aim of providing online access to the collections. The intern will
be supervised by the archivist and receive basic archival training.
The preferred candidate will be undergraduate or graduate student majoring in History, Library
Science, American Studies or similar field of study.
Archives Processing
Spring 2009
The intern will be responsible for processing and arranging archival collections. These duties
include arranging collections according to archival methods, researching collections as needed,
writing finding aids, and performing digital imagining, as needed. The intern will be trained by
an experienced archivist.
The candidate must have the skills and background necessary to perform the duties of the intern
including word processing and computer skills, experience using a flatbed scanner, knowledge of
American or Missouri history, the ability to work independently once trained good written and
oral communication skills, and basic research skills involving the use of primary source
documents. As with all MHM unpaid internships, the intern must be able to commit to a
minimum of 150 onsite hours.
The preferred candidate will be a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in History, Library
Science, Museum Studies, American Studies or similar field of study.
Photographs and Prints General Processing

The intern will be responsible for processing new donations. S/he will learn how to arrange
collections, create finding aides, and identify various photographic and print processes. S/he will
be trained in MHM processing policies, the use of a Microsoft Access database, and will be
introduced to image research, exhibition guidelines, preservations concerns and research uses.
The candidate must have the basic computer skills, good written and oral communication skills.
The preferred candidate will be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in History, Library
Studies, Museum Studies, American Studies or similar field of study.

Photographs and Prints Digitization
Spring 2009
The intern will be responsible for digitizing photographs of portraits and scenes from the Civil
War to aid in preparation for an upcoming exhibit on the 150th anniversary of the war. S/he will
be trained in MHM digitization policies and procedures, the use of Photoshop and Microsoft
Access, and will be introduced to image research, exhibition guidelines, preservation concerns
and research uses.
The candidate must have the basic computer skills, good written and oral communication skills.
The preferred candidate will be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in History, Library
Studies, Museum Studies, American Studies or similar field of study.

The intern will be responsible for updating the inventory and doing some cataloging in the
Missouri History museum’s collection of 19th century prints. The print collections include early
St. Louis and Missouri views, 19th century newspaper illustrations, prints of American Indians,
and political scenes and cartoons. S/he will be trained in MHM processing policies, the use of a
Microsoft Access database, and will be introduced to image research, exhibition guidelines,
preservation concerns and research issues.
The candidate must have the basic computer skills, good written and oral communication skills.
The preferred candidate will be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in History, Library
Studies, Museum Studies, American Studies or similar field of study.
