Grenzebach closes automation gap

Grenzebach develops customer-specific Automated Guided Vehicle according to

Scania requirements - completely integrated into the production process

The task sounds simple, but the realization is quite demanding: the chassis profiles with a length of 6 to 11 m manufactured by Scania have to be automatically transported over a distance of 10 m from a conveyor to an assembly table. This task is repeated within a cycle time of less than 5 minutes. The system has to work reliably and safely and has to provide high robustness for industrial series operation.

Automated Guided Vehicle 'snoxCustomized' as automation solution

For this purpose, Grenzebach has developed an individual system, which is exactly conceived for the Scania requirements. The idea behind it is an Automated Guided Vehicle

(AGV) which automatically picks and lits the goods from below the conveyor, transports them and deposits them onto the assembly table and returns to the initial situation respecting the operator safety.

The system can travel forward at a speed of 0.3 m per second, can move in three degrees of freedom - forward and backward, rotate sidewards and is thus extremely flexible. The size of the complete AGV may not be underestimated in this case: with a length of 10.7 m and a width of 1.6 m and a loading capacity of 1.1 tons the system is a giant among the Automated

Guided Vehicles. In spite of this, it reaches a positioning accuracy of +/- 3 mm.

Its four forks can be extended at the right as well as at the left side to 1.8 m and can be lifted to a height of 230 mm. In order to ensure that the forks can lift the goods from beneath, the height of the system of 0.75 m is optimum. Stabilizer feet were installed for better balance, which extend while the goods are picked up.

For staff safety of the vehicle, four safety scanners were installed which also take the extended forks on both sides into consideration.

The concept as well as the realization were completed by Grenzebach within a very short time: from order placement to the delivery date in only 22 weeks. The great challenge in this respect was that commissioning at the customer's plant had to take place in only 2.5 weeks.

For this reason, the system was built and tested at SNOX in Aartsellar, so that only implementation into the production process had to be done at the customer's plant in Angers,

France. Thus, production downtimes could be avoided and Scania has now a highperformance and reliable AGV for efficient production.
