New developments
Thanks to a special partnership between the Charles Hastings Education Centre and the University of
Worcester, we now have two sites through which we can offer unique experiences to schools within the
areas of medical and local history, science, PSHE and much more. With collections spanning nearly
three centuries, there are excellent opportunities to develop skills in historical enquiry and to build
understanding in chronology and change through investigating medical and public health advancements.
Choose to visit one or both museums. Our joint packages provide ideal opportunities for crosscurricular working and can help facilitate the development of essential skills such as interrogating
evidence. This creates time for debate, discussion and reflection. Our Education Teams offer a varied
programme of workshops and are on hand to tailor these to suit your specific needs in enriching
curriculum studies. Access to both venues is free, however booking is required for all groups.
George Marshall Medical Museum
For over 10 years we have been fascinating school groups with our engaging workshops about the
history of medicine. We are located at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and have free coach parking.
KS2 - 5 visits cover History, Art & Design, English and Citizenship, and are structured around our
historical medical displays which include a Victorian apothecary’s shop, the death masks of hanged
Worcester criminals and a 19th-Century operating theatre, as well as the use of authentic artefacts
from our handling collection. We also have a lecture theatre in which your class can watch our 25-minute
film Heroes of Medicine. If you are unable to make it to the George Marshall Medical Museum, we
provide outreach sessions and handling boxes to be used within your own classroom. Contact Louise
Price on 01905 760 738 or louise.price@worcsacute.nhs.uk.
The Infirmary
The Infirmary is a fantastic interactive exhibition of medicine, health and wellbeing. It is housed
within the former Worcester Royal Infirmary on Castle Street, now part of the University of Worcester.
The Infirmary experience enables students to explore the local stories of staff and patients from the
hospital, with a particular emphasis on scientific development and some of the hidden histories of health.
The gallery runs a series of interactive workshops to complement KS2 - 5 Science, History, Citizenship,
Art and Design and PSHE. All programmes are supported by interactive stations, handling collections
and tours of the building which enables students to explore health within the context of the building.
Contact Carol Bowsher, Learning & Access Officer at c.bowsher@worc.ac.uk or telephone 01905
542540.
Our programmes
Please take your time to look through the available workshops. Those shaded turquoise are primarily
offered at the George Marshall Medical Museum, and those in grey at The Infirmary. However, we can
be very flexible on locations and would like to make planning your visit as simple as possible. We
generally recommend a tour and 1 or 2 programme options depending on length of visit and area of
study with a maximum of 3 workshops in a day.
The cost of each workshop is based upon a group of no less than 20 and no more than 35 students.
Concessions: we will admit 2 free adults per 8 students. Pre-visits are free. Please get in touch and we’ll
help you to plan the perfect visit for your school.

If you can’t come to us…
…there are a number of ways in which your class can still enjoy our resources.
Outreach & Loans boxes
The most effective schools use enrichment activities regularly to support learning.
Ofsted Report 2011
Using objects in the classroom will help your pupils learn that the past can be represented in a variety of
different ways. You will also help serve your lower ability students by engaging them with a new way to
learn. We have handling boxes and sessions planned for the following topics, and we welcome
suggestions for new topics and themes:-
Black Teeth and Blacksmiths (History KS1/2; Teeth and Eating KS2 Sc2 2a)
-
Nursing with Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale (History KS1/2)
-
Dirty Dentures, Tired Teeth & Fragile Fangs (History KS2; Teeth and Eating KS2 Sc2 2a)
-
History of Medicine revision box (GCSE Medicine through Time)
We can either visit you for a session/s led by us, or you can borrow a box of the same objects for an
agreed period of time. During this time you have the opportunity to deliver the session as many times,
and with as many classes as you like. Handling authentic historical objects and using archival materials
gives your students the chance to enquire and learn about how the past is different from the present day.
They can be used successfully as part of GCSE revision sessions and in our Mantle of the Expert
programme.
Outreach Sessions - We charge £40.00 for one session with one class lasting 60 minutes. This charge
also covers our travel costs and resources. Any additional session(s) in the same day with any class will
be charged at £30.00.
Loans Box - Only one box can be borrowed at any one time. We charge £15.00 for a maximum of 5
days. To book an outreach session or loans box for your school, get in touch with Louise Price:louise.price@worcsacute.nhs.uk or telephone 01905 760738.
Combining your visit
Combination visits are a good way for large groups to get the most out of what the two sites have to
offer, providing a full day’s activities. If transport permits, you may wish to take half the group to the
George Marshall Medical Museum and half to the Infirmary, and then swap over.
Both sites also offer potential links with other heritage and museum centres in Worcester. For example,
you may wish to consider an extended learning programme by looking at Medieval Life and Medicine
and the role of Monastic Infirmaries at the Commandery prior to a visit to the George Marshall Medical
Museum. Alternatively, the Building Detectives workshop could be combined with a visit to The Hive,
Worcester’s combined centre for libraries, archives and local history. This provides an opportunity to
compare a Georgian public building with a 21st century centre, exploring the properties and use of
materials.
How to book
A provisional booking form is enclosed with this pack.
To avoid disappointment, please return the booking form via email or post with details of your visit
