ADDING VALUE AND SERVING YOU EVEN BETTER IN 2007
1. RETAIL SALES FALLING AS INTEREST RATES START TO BITE
According to Statistics SA retail sales for April fell 4,2% with annual growth slowing to its lowest pace in 19
months. Retail sales grew a seasonally adjusted 5,4% compared with April last year, down from 10,5% in March
and the lowest annual rise since September 2005. The rates rise in the second half of 2006 has started impacting
spending and the Reserve Bank’s latest hike is expected to dampen down spending even further. However, the
rise in spending on basic goods from newly employed people with low incomes should keep tills tinkling.
2. MOVERS AND SHAKERS
Nedbank Corporate Property Finance has announced that Brian Roberts has been appointed divisional director
of its Gauteng region with immediate effect. Roberts has taken over from Ken Reynolds who has taken over a
national role to facilitate a broad range of deals. Roberts has worked for Nedbank before and until he rejoined
the bank earlier this year was managing director of Zenprop.
3. DERIVATIVES MARKET: LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS
Property fund managers, asset allocation and property risk managers, lending bankers, professional advisers to
property fund managers, lawyers and
accountants dealing with property companies
and funds should take note.

property derivatives. Venue is Melrose Arch
hotel in Johannesburg and date is 14 June

shareholders had approved its black economic
empowerment deal which will see eligible employees taking up around 10% of its stock.

There is a chapter of the SA Council of Shopping Centres in most of South Africa’s major centres near
you. Meet your colleagues in the industry and share your ideas. Set yourself a target of inviting at
least two guests for each function you attend. Chapter committee members have been tasked with specific
functions and a call to your local chapter may see you getting involved in some task which may be of great
interest.
Contact your nearest chapter and maximise your membership benefits today. For details see end of Tgif
8. GOOD NEWS ON THE CHAPTER FRONT
The news is that the SACSC has formed new satellite chapters to serve members located some distance away
from the main chapters in some of the major centres. East London members will no longer have to travel to
Port Elizabeth to attend chapter functions. Similarly, members living in the Free State province will see their
lives being made easier through the formation of a satellite chapter in Welkom. And for those members living
in Nelspruit a new chapter has been formed.
The decision has also been taken to merge the Johannesburg and Tshwane/Pretoria chapters. The existing
chairpersons, Beverley Deans of Johannesburg and Clint Ralph of Tshwane/Pretoria, will act as cochairpersons. The chapter will be based in Johannesburg and will be called Gauteng.
The SACSC welcomes the new chapter chairpersons, Joseph Parsley of East London, Wendy Andrews of
Welkom and Cornelia Zoomers of Nelspruit. Contact details for the new chapters are at the end of this issue
of Tgif. Contact these new chapters and get involved at a local level.
