RETAIL SALES FALLING AS INTEREST RATES START TO BITE According to Statistics SA retail sales for April fell 4,2% with annual growth slowing to its lowest pace in 19 months. Retail sales grew a seasonally adjusted 5,4% compared with April last year, down from 10,5% in March and the lowest annual rise since September 2005. The rates rise in the second half of 2006 has started impacting spending and the Reserve Bank’s latest hike is expected to dampen down spending even further. However, the rise in spending on basic goods from newly employed people with low incomes should keep tills tinkling. 2. MOVERS AND SHAKERS Nedbank Corporate Property Finance has announced that Brian Roberts has been appointed divisional director of its Gauteng region with immediate effect. Roberts has taken over from Ken Reynolds who has taken over a national role to facilitate a broad range of deals. Roberts has worked for Nedbank before and until he rejoined the bank earlier this year was managing director of Zenprop. 3. DERIVATIVES MARKET: LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS Property fund managers, asset allocation and property risk managers, lending bankers, professional advisers to property fund managers, lawyers and accountants dealing with property companies and funds should take note. Investment Property Databank (IPD) Training is presenting a one-day seminar on understanding property derivatives. SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE WOOLWORTHS EMPOWERMENT DEAL Woolworths Holdings has announced that its shareholders had approved its black economic empowerment deal which will see eligible employees taking up around 10% of its stock. 5. FINAL REMINDER ABOUT ICSC EUROPE’S 5-DAY RETAIL PROPERTY SCHOOL For the fifth time ICSC Europe is to hold its Retail Property School. Venue is La Meridien in Brussels and dates are 24 to 29 June. Modules, for attendees with less than three years’ experience in the industry, include the fundamentals of shopping centre management and the essentials of shopping centre marketing. More experienced attendees can choose between advanced strategic knowledge of shopping centre marketing or advanced strategic knowledge of shopping centre management. MUSICA TO FACE THE MUSIC July 23 is the date on which Musica, part of the Clicks stable, is to appear in the Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria. The allegation is that the retailer has sold counterfeit Sony PlayStation2 consoles and memory cards. 7. GET INVOLVED WITH YOUR LOCAL CHAPTER There is a chapter of the SA Council of Shopping Centres in most of South Africa’s major centres near you. Meet your colleagues in the industry and share your ideas. Set yourself a target of inviting at least two guests for each function you attend. Chapter committee members have been tasked with specific functions and a call to your local chapter may see you getting involved in some task which may be of great interest. GOOD NEWS ON THE CHAPTER FRONT The news is that the SACSC has formed new satellite chapters to serve members located some distance away from the main chapters in some of the major centres. East London members will no longer have to travel to Port Elizabeth to attend chapter functions. Similarly, members living in the Free State province will see their lives being made easier through the formation of a satellite chapter in Welkom. And for those members living in Nelspruit a new chapter has been formed. The decision has also been taken to merge the Johannesburg and Tshwane/Pretoria chapters. The existing chairpersons, Beverley Deans of Johannesburg and Clint Ralph of Tshwane/Pretoria, will act as cochairpersons. The chapter will be based in Johannesburg and will be called Gauteng. The SACSC welcomes the new chapter chairpersons, Joseph Parsley of East London, Wendy Andrews of Welkom and Cornelia Zoomers of Nelspruit. FOOTPRINT AWARDS: CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES Entries for the prestigious Footprint awards, to recognise excellence in shopping centre marketing, close on 31 August. Entry forms are available on the SACSC website, www.shoppingcouncil.co.za (Award Programmes). The gold awards will be presented as well as what formerly was called the Grand Prix award and will henceforth be one of four Spectrum awards, at the first Spectrum Awards gala function at the magnificent Vodacom Vodadome complex in Midrand on 8 November this year. Make your mark as a marketing expert this year and win a Spectrum award. 10. SPECIAL STAR AWARDS PROGRAMME HOTTING UP Entry forms for the 2007 Special Star awards programme, to determine South Africa’s top retailer and service provider to the shopping centre industry, are available on the SACSC website, www.shoppingcouncil.co.za or from Kirsten Love at kirsten@sacsc.org.za. The organisers advise, that judging from entries already received, this year’s programme is attracting significant interest as nominations from shopping centres have exceed last year’s entries already. The programme is run on a regional basis and dinners have been organised to announce the winners. RETAIL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AWARD The fourth Spectrum award will be presented to the winner of the Retail Design Development Award (RDDA). The winners in the four categories will attend the Spectrum Awards gala function on 8 November and an overall winner will be announced. 12. BCSC TO HOST IMPORTANT ONE-DAY SEMINAR The British Council of Shopping Centres is to host a one-day seminar with the theme : “Retail Property – an eye to the future” on Tuesday 26 June at the Imagination Galleries, in London. For members planning to be in London that day, the seminar which will cover retail trends over the next 10 years, consumer issues, the Internet, brands, transport, planning, retails and designs, is available free of charge. ICSC TO MAKE HUMANITARIAN AWARD AT THE 2007 RETAIL REAL ESTATE WORLD SUMMIT The ICSC Humanitarian Award for sub-Saharan Africa has been established by the ICSC Educational Foundation to recognise exceptional contributions of shopping centres in sub-Saharan Africa to recognise exceptional contributions to communities in which they are located. A shopping centre owner or manager may submit an entry which must be a single or ongoing event, programme or project that benefits a charitable or community need.. The award will be presented at the 2007 Retail Real Estate World Summit in Cape Town. Prize money for the winning entrant is $10 000 which will be donated to the philanthropic or social cause supported by the centre. The centre will be awarded a commemorative plaque. Details of the programme are still being finalised and SACSC members will be kept up to speed. 15. PRIMEDIA ACQUIRES STAKE IN LIFESTYLE COMMUNICATIONS AND POP The Primedia Group has acquired a majority stake in Lifestyle Communications and POP (Point of Presence) from Old Mutual Property Group. Both companies now operate under Primedia Unlimited, a division of Primedia Limited established at the end of 2004 to acquire, develop and grow new and innovative sectors of the media industry. Lifestyle Communications has been re-branded Primedia Lifestyle, POP has been incorporated into Primall Media.
