Storm Stories Project
The project theme will be Storm Stories with an emphasis on severe coastal tropical and post-tropical
systems (Hurricanes, Super Storms) that made landfall along the US East Coast or Gulf Coast.
The poster should be informational and you may work in a team of at least three people and no more
than five people. It can be made on a PPT, Google Doc Presentation or Prezi.
Here are the essentials of the project:
All of the following must be met…
1. A catchy title that embodies the storm. Also include RSC logo and other appropriate logo(s) (2
points)
2. A section in the poster that addresses the Formation of the Storm (10 points)
- Where was it formed
- How was it formed
- When was it formed
- What were the favorable conditions for its formation
- Show maps
3. A section dealing with Storm Specifics… (12 points)
- Barometric Pressure (lowest recorded) and wind speed
- Maximum wave height recorded
- Duration and progression of the storm from Tropical Depression to Hurricane
- Size of the storm and “eye wall” diameter
- Track of the storm as it approached landfall (you can use a separate map for this)
- Can you find a WAM model or surf report of the storm wave heights?
4. A section dealing with Landfall (10 points)
- When and Where did it make landfall
- What was the storm surge at the time of landfall
- How fast was the storm moving at landfall
- What was the barometric pressure and wind speed at landfall (gusts and sustained)
- How far did warning extend as a result of landfall
5. A section dealing with Effects (12 points)
- How much damage was incurred
- Was the damage more wind or water-based?
- How far inland did the damage extend
- What were the estimated costs of the damage at the time?
- What locations saw good surfing waves from the storm?
- Pictures are worth a thousand words!
6. An overall conclusion as to ways to deal with the storm if it were to make landfall again (4 pts)
I will be surveying each of you about your role in the project as part of the team and asking your thoughts
about the team in general. You will present your posters during class on 2/16/14.
