Outline We have 3 vacancies on the developing Leadership

Foundation Track at The Royal Bolton Hospital.

Bolton is well placed to provide foundation training, with its reputation for excellent hospital and community experience and teaching. Alongside the skills, competence and experience you will be gaining as a foundation doctor you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and competence as a potential leader within the healthcare system. You will have the opportunity to link in with various ongoing Trust work streams relating specifically to patient safety, reducing harm and mortality reduction projects at Bolton

Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As well developing an insight and gaining experience from the role of medical leaders within a busy acute Trust. The Trust supports trainee participation in the NHS Leadership

Academy programme, if the trainee wishes to undertake formal leadership qualifications.

All Leadership trainees are allocated the equivalent of an afternoon per week throughout the two year programme to fulfill the Leadership commitments.

Post : F1 Colorectal/General Surgery

The department: General Surgery

Main duties of the post:

A busy post. Many acute and elective patients with complex problems will be cared for across several wards.

Senior support is good

General educational objectives include:

History taking

Examination

Managing time and priorities

Communication

Consenting

FY1’s are encouraged to attend theatres and get involved in practical procedures. The same applies to endoscopy and outpatient clinics.

The middle grade support to the foundation doctors is very good as this post attracts the best local trainees.

Foundation Programme Training Description

Post : F1 Paediatrics

The department:

The Dept of Paediatrics comprises 9 paediatric consultants, 3 consultant community paediatricians also contribute to the on call rota. This includes 6 resident consultant paediatricians who are present in the wards until 10 PM Mon-Fri. There is a middle grade presence 24 hours and also regular shifts by advanced nurse practitioners.

There are interests in Diabetes, Respiratory Diseases, Allergy, ambulatory paediatrics, medical education and Cardiology. All paediatric pathologies are represented.

The department serves the children of Bolton and its neighbouring districts - a child population of about 65,000 children.

The department is closely linked with tertiary services in Manchester and Liverpool.

Main duties of the post:

The position of a Foundation trainee year 1 in Paediatrics at RBH holds much potential for training and development. The role is supernumerary and as a result allows some flexibility in where the trainee would like/needs to gain experience.

All F1 Doctors will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. They will be involved with the generic clerking of patients being admitted and the ongoing care of the patients in the unit. There is no commitment to out of hours work in normal circumstances. There is provision of consultant and middle grade advice, support and supervision at all times.

The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to

Take a history and examine a patient

Identify and synthesise problems

Prescribe safely

Keep an accurate and relevant medical record

Manage time and clinical priorities effectively

Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues

Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care

Act in a professional manner at all times

Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems

Educate patients effectively

Become life-long learners and teachers.

The daily duties include:

1. Attending Handover

2. Attending ward rounds

3. Clerking and reviewing patients and formulating management plans with senior support

4. Gain experience in paediatric practical procedures such as venepuncture, cannulation, blood gases etc.

5. Attend and participate in the departmental teaching programme

6. Accompany and support seniors in A&E resus calls

7. Updating handover lists and ward jobs

8. Chasing outstanding investigations

9. Ensure ward discharges are kept up to date

10. Attending outpatients both general and community

Foundation Programme Training Description

Post : F1 Gastroenterology

The department:

Gastroenterology unit at RBH comprises 5 consultants and an IBD nurse consultant.

We provide comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal and Liver disorders. The department has daily consultant ward rounds and MDT meetings

Main duties of the post:

Ward based except when on call. FY1 will be supervised at all times.

Responsibilities involve clerking patients, requesting appropriate investigations, safe prescribing, ongoing care of in –patients, opportunities to sit in out-patient clinics and watch endoscopy

Foundation Programme Training Description

Post : F2 Anaesthetics

The department:

Eight bedded unit with ventilated patients providing level 2 and level 3 care.

Main duties of the post:

Initial daily review of each patient and then presentation on the ward round. The afternoon is used to do the jobs and procedures detailed from the ward round such as insertion of invasive lines and organizing investigations.

Post : F2 Psychiatry

The department:

Assessment and management of psychiatric illness in community and hospital setting.

Develop knowledge of Mental Health Act and assessment of Capacity. Develop knowledge of provision of psychiatric services.

Main duties of the post:

To work alongside the above teams. Assessment of patients and developing initial management plans, dealing with physical problems as they arise and taking part in the on-call rota supported by more senior staff.
