Lloyd A. Shaw and James H. Shaw, both of McKee, Injured When Automobile Is Struck by Pennsy Test
Train at Duncansville Crossing Just Above the Y.
ELDER MAN SUCCUMBS AT HOSPITAL IN THIS CITY
They Fail to See Train Drawn by Big Cascade Engine Which Is Making a Series of Test Trips--Father Has
Chest Crushed and Son a Crush of Skull
Two men, father and son, were injured, the father fatally, at 10.10 o'clock this morning when the
automobile coupe in which they were riding was struck by a train on the New Portage line of the
Pennsylvania railroad at the Seventh street grade crossing in Duncansville, just west of New Portage
Junction.
The dead:
Lloyd A. Shaw, [portion missing] [of] McKee; chest crushed on right side, left hip and several ribs
fractured. He died at the Altoona hospital at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
The injured:
James H. Shaw, aged 40, of McKee, son of Lloyd Shaw, crushed [fracture?] of the skull and abrasions all
over the limbs and body.
Both men were brought to the Altoona hospital after the accident and it was found that both were in a very
critical condition. The son is lying in an unconscious condition, while the father regained consciousness
before he expired.
Mr. Shaw was born at Poplar Run, the son of Alex and Hannah Shaw and was aged 68. He is survived by
his wife and nine children, Mrs. Alice Smith and Mrs. Lillian Kunsman of Gallitzin, Samuel, John and
Elmer of Duncansville, Mrs. Jennie Boyer of McKee, H[arry?] of Newry, Mrs. Annie Burket of East
Freedom and James of McKee, who was with his father in the accident.
He is also survived by these brothers: James Shaw of McKee, Wilson and Miles of Newry, Edward of East
Freedom, Lewis of Altoona, and [portion of article cut off here - ed.]
Other Son Lives Nearby.
Another son of Lloyd Shaw lives just a short distance from where the accident occurred. He was at home
when the crash occurred. He heard it and went out to investigate, being horrified to find that it was his
father and brother who were the victims.
They left their home at 5.30 o'clock this morning and drove to Duncansville with the purpose of buying a
tire for their automobile, a coupe.
The train which hit them is an extra that is being operated by the Pittsburgh division authorities over the
New Portage line for the purpose of testing one of the new Cascade engines for the passenger service, an
account of which was published in the Altoona Mirror last week.
The train was manned by a Pittsburgh division crew. It had started before the junction and by the time it
reached the point of the accident was running at a speed of about fifteen miles an hour.
Men Fail to See Train.
The elder Shaw was driving the coupe and it is quite evident that neither he nor his son saw the train
running towards them until they were on the track, too late for them to get out of the way. The coupe was
completely demolished by the impact and the men were hurled to the side of the track.
They were picked up by the train crew and by John Shaw and others who were attracted by the accident.
Medical aid was summoned and as soon as possible they were placed aboard a train and brought to
Altoona, being conveyed to the hospital from the station by the ambulance.
It was stated at the railroad company offices that the crossing where the accident occurred is protected by
the signals that are regularly employed in the company at all grade crossings along the lines and company
officials are at a loss to know why these did not attract the attention of the unfortunate men, even though
they did not see the train as it ran towards them.
Railroad officials are making a thorough investigation of the accident.
Both Are Quarrymen.
The Shaws formerly resided in the vicinity of Puzzletown, but they have lived at McKee for about twenty
years and were usually employed in the ganister quarries in that vicinity. It was stated today that neither
had been employed lately.
Mr. Shaw was a member of the United Brethren church in East Freedom, where he was a constant attendant
at the services and took an active part in the work of the church and Sunday school.
Upon learning of the accident in Duncansville this morning, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Vera Shaw,
telephoned to McKee and the wives of Lloyd and James Shaw came to Duncansville but the two men had
already been brought to this city and they were also hurriedly brought to the hospital and were at the
institution when the elder Mr. Shaw succumbed.
