Basic Canine Dentistry, Hawkins. Feline Dentistry, Hawkins. Class notes packet. COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to teach students to function in a surgical assistance capacity. Students will be taught pre- and post-surgical care of animals, surgical preparation of the patient, as well as how to assist during actual surgeries. Basic techniques of veterinary dentistry will also be taught. Upon completion of this course , the student should be able to: 1. Identify surgical instruments and be familiar with their use. 2. Prepare surgery packs. 3. Utilize the autoclave. 4. Prepare animals for surgery. 5. Gown up and assist in surgery. 6. Care for pre- and post-surgical patients. 7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of commonly performed surgical procedures. 8. Perform basic veterinary dental care. GRADING PROCEDURE: 2 midterm written exams (each worth 100 pts.) 3 midterm practical exams (first worth 80 pts., surgery 30 pts., dental 40 pts.) 1 final written exam Quizzes = = 200 pts. 150 pts. = = 100 pts. 30 pts. 480 Total Points Grades will be assigned based on the percentage of total points attained in accordance with the departmental grading system.
