A timeline of the Calgary Stampede
Lesson overview
The Calgary Stampede has a rich and fascinating history. In order to create a visual
timeline of the events that shaped the Calgary Stampede, students will use the
online interactive map as well as the Calgary Stampede and Canadian Atlas Online

created for the Calgary Stampede and important events that occurred in Canadian

Introduction
Lesson
Development
Manitoba – Grade 6
Teacher activity
Start the activity by having students
look at the history section of the
Calgary Stampede thematic on the
Canadian Atlas Online. While you are
reading through this section of the
thematic, have students take notes
about important dates and events that
helped to shape the Calgary
Stampede.
As a class, have students work to
create a visual representation of the
important events that have shaped the
Calgary Stampede.
Have students select one point from
the timeline from the one you created
as a class and research other
important events around the country
that happened in the same time
period.
Have them plot their events on both a
Canadian map and the timeline that
you have created in class.
Conclusion
Have students discuss their events
with the class and place them on the
timeline. As a class, determine if there
are any trends that they see in the
events. Ask students what they think
this means on a national level? How
can this relate the Calgary Stampede
to the rest of the county?
Student activity
Students will read, either
alone or as a class, the
Calgary Stampede
thematic on the Canadian
Atlas Online. They will
take note of any and all
important dates and
events that were pivotal to
the development of the
Calgary Stampede.
Students will assist with
making a visual
representation of the
Calgary Stampede’s
history.
In their assigned groups,
students will work to
select and research an
event that has happened
elsewhere in Canada at
the same time as an
important event in the
stampede.
Students will research and
create another visual
representation to add to
the timeline that was
produced during the
introduction of the lesson.
Students will discuss their
research with the class
and place their visual
representation on the
timeline.
Students will make
inferences and educated
guesses about the trends
and themes they see on
the timeline.
Lesson extension
This lesson can be extended to include a more in-depth look at important historical
events in both Canada and the world. In addition, they can research and present
their findings to the class.
Assessment of student learning
Students can be assessed on their research skills and their ability to research and
work in groups.
