Salary Scale: £18,652 - £21,798 per annum
Maintenance Craftsperson – Mechanical Fitter is required to join our team within NHS Tayside,
Angus Division and will be based at Stracathro Hospital.
The minimum education/training requirements for the post are a recognised Mechanical Crafts
Apprenticeship, City & Guilds Qualification, SVQ/NVQ Certificates or equivalent approved
qualification and experience.
The main duties of the post will be to diagnose and repair faults on mechanical installations, plant
and equipment including steam and other heating, ventilation, electric vehicles, piped gases etc.
within the Angus area properties.
You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota.
You will be required to achieve the mandatory Induction standards for Healthcare Support
Workers in Scotland and to comply with the Code of Conduct throughout your
employment.

JOB PURPOSE
The Post Holder will act as a fully trained and certificated Mechanical Fitter to provide Mechanical
Services to meet the needs of the service.
To Install, Repair and Maintain mechanical equipment within all Properties of the organization in order
that the equipment can carry out its intended purpose safely and to ensure the smooth operation of the
Mechanical Systems within the Organisation.
To carry out all trade emergency repairs at all Angus PCD sites when participating in the Angus PCD
On Call Rota and as and when required during normal working hours.
The Postholder is based at Stracathro Hospital and may be required to work at any NHS Tayside
property as and when necessary.

SCOPE AND RANGE
To perform work including activities that may be demanding and/or non-routine.
Responsible for Testing, Fault Finding and Repair on Mechanical Plant and Equipment.
(Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems, Steam Raising Plant and Associated Equipment,
Calorifier Systems, Low Pressure Hot Water Systems, Medical Gas Systems, Hydraulic and Pneumatic
Systems, Compressors, Sterilisers, Washer Disinfectors, Bedpan washers/macerators, ward equipment
such as beds, cot sides, wheelchairs etc.)

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Induction Standards & Code of Conduct
Your performance must comply with the national “Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare
Support Workers” 2009; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers.















To work in accordance with the requirements of HTM2022 Medical Gases, HTM2027 Water
Supplies, as an appointed Competent Person.
To work in Hazardous areas taking all Safety measures to prevent Danger, Avoid Injury, and
Prevent Damage to Equipment.
To participate in the operation of Mechanical Planned Maintenance Schemes and the Management
Control System (Job Dockets, Timesheets).
To undertake essential repair work and general maintenance activities under the instruction of the
Maintenance Supervisor.
To liaise with the Maintenance Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures and to request
supply of goods and/or services as necessary.
To carry out planned Preventative Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing in accordance with agreed
procedures and relevant HTM`s.
To complete all report sheets, Test Certificates, and Log Books as necessary.
To use the Building Management System for the control of Plant.
To follow detailed Mechanical Engineering drawings and Manufacturers Specifications with
reference to the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Estates Officers when necessary.
To use all relevant tools and equipment within safety guidelines as necessary for the completion of
works.
To undertake faultfinding on Complex and Critical Medical Gas & Medical Vacuum Systems and
Equipment, using FaultFinding Skills and detailed examination to gain a solution.
To carry Communication Devices (Pagers and/or two way Radios and Mobile telephone) to
facilitate immediate response to Emergencies particularly when carrying out on call duties.
To erect and use Access and Restraint Equipment safely and effectively.
Carry out work for Statutory Insurance Inspections.
Follow polices, procedures HTM`s, statutory guidelines, and codes of practice as relevant and
propose changes to working practices for own work area.
To carry out all trades emergency breakdown repairs at all Angus PCD sites when participating in
the Angus PCD on call rota working on own initiative in response to calls from Site Managers/Duty
Nurse Managers and the like as and when required during normal working hours.

mechanical/heating systems and related equipment.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

Recognised and registered EITB or CITB (or equivalent) craft apprenticeship and HNC/ONC/
BTEC Mechanical Engineering
Or City and Guilds 205 Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Part 2.
Or City and Guild 214 Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Part 2.
Or Equivalent Approved Qualification, or in special circumstances equivalent experience.
And Experience and Training which will be appropriate to satisfy the necessary academic standards,
required.

A valid current Driving License is essential as the post involves driving between the various sites
both during normal hours and when on call using NHS Tayside vehicles.

Medical Gas Pipe Systems HTM2022 for Competent Persons (MGPS) (after appropriate training).

Training in Steriliser Maintenance and Testing would be desirable.

Trained in Lifting and Handling, First Aid, Asbestos Awareness, Confined Spaces, Restraint
Systems, Scaffolding Erection, Legionellae Procedures and Safety at Work (after appropriate
training).

Trained in Tig welding (after appropriate training).

To attend training establishments/on the job training as necessary.

To have knowledge of own trade to a high level of skill that will enable them to deliver a constant
and consistent high standard of work, which they have been trained in or are otherwise experienced
to deliver.

To have undergone multi-skilling training for electrical services for fitters, to allow postholder to
carry out basic electrical and plumbing work, both in normal hours and when on call and be
HTM2020 (LV) Skilled Person.
ESSENTIAL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

Complex Systems: - Medical Gas & Medical Vacuum Distribution Equipment, Standby Generators.

Service, Test, Diagnose, and Repair Advanced Systems: -Low Pressure Steam Boilers and
associated plant, Air Compressors, Heat Exchangers, Industrial Kitchen and Laundry Equipment,
Low Pressure Steam Plant, Low Pressure Hot Water Systems, Compressors Sterilisers, Washer
Disinfectors, Bedpan Washers/macerators.

Lifts, Fire Alarm Systems, Security/Staff Alarms and the like when on call.

Repair and Maintain using relevant Tools and Equipment Existing Equipment and Fixtures: Pumps, Heating and Ventilation Plant, Valves, Shafts and Bearings.

Install and Commission New Equipment and Fixtures as required: - Replacement Pipe work,
Radiators, Steam and Air Valves.
Responsibility For Records Management
All records created in the course of the business of NHS Tayside are corporate records and are public
records under the terms of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 1937. This includes email messages and
other electronic records. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep appropriate records of your

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB (EXAMPLES)

Periods of Intense Physical Effort: - Installation/Extraction of Pumps, Gearboxes, and Ventilation
Plant. Installing Heavy Piping.

Periods of Intense Mental Effort: - Using Fine Tools, Welding, Taking Measurements to Fine
Tolerances of Engineering Components, Fabrication of Replacement Parts and Faultfinding on
Complex Systems.

Periods of Emotional Effort: - Mortuaries, Body Fridges, Psychiatric Wards, and Contact with
Mentally and Terminally ill and isolated Patients.

Working in Confined Spaces: - Working in and around Ducting and Pipe work, Plant rooms, Roof
Spaces.

Working in Hazardous Areas: - Working on Sluice Machines/Waste Disposals, Working at Heights,
Steam Plant, Chemical Pumps, Working in Controlled Infectious Areas.

Working in Dusty/Dirty/High/Low Temperature Areas: - Working in Plant rooms, Calorifier
rooms, Boiler rooms, Main Kitchen, Laundry Plant and Equipment.

Working on call on an all trades emergency repair service at all sites in the area at all times of day
and night with limited support then having to drive home when finished work.
10. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
Plan and Organize, own workload to find, Prioritized, Proactive Solutions to suit the needs of the
service, applying Skills, Judgement, and Experience to minimize and control the hazards to patients,
staff, visitors, and themselves within the properties of the organization through failure of systems.
Operate Unsupervised and use own Initiative to establish the performance or other attributes of a
system and to Compare, Analyse and Interpretate the results, to Determine Remedial Action/Spares
required.
Use own knowledge to effect all trades repairs when on call, or to know when to request assistance
from management and./or other trades.
11. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
Keeping up to date with the advances of technology in the Mechanical fields through training and
personal development.
Location of Heating Faults, Boiler failures, and Isolation of Steam and Hot Water Pipework within
continuously changing properties and systems, including fault finding/repair of steam boilers, laundry
equipment and kitchen equipment.
Providing an efficient on call service for all trades at sites which may not be totally familiar to the
postholder.

The terms and conditions of service for this post are those
determined by the NHS Staff Council.
The current salary scale for the post is £18,652 to £21,798 (pro rata
for part-time staff). Placing on the scale on appointment is normally
at the minimum but may be higher subject to verification of previous
relevant service.
Salary is paid weekly by Bank Credit Transfer.
The hours of the post are 37.5 hours per week.
Start and finish times will be determined by the needs of the
service.
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is not
compulsory but is open to all staff between the ages of 16 and 70
(65 in some instances).
The contributions paid are a percentage of superannuable pay,
which is essentially basic pay excluding, for example, overtime or
travelling expenses.
Contribution rates with effect from 01.04.12 are as follows:
