Class descriptions:
Ballet
Beauty, flow and elegance are inherent in the elements of ballet. Ballet is the classical dance form that can be mastered by itself or
used as a technical base or supplement to other dance forms. Classes focus on overall body alignment and awareness, flexibility and
grace with emphasis on proper usage of feet and legs and execution of turnout. Carriage and usage of upper torso and arms are also
stressed. Traditional barre work, center work and combinations are included in all classes. Classes are based on the Cecchetti method
which is world renown.
Jazz
An exciting and ever evolving dance form full of rhythm, syncopation, passion and life. Steeped in the rhythm of jazz music, a true
American art form, jazz dance brings energy and life to all those who dance it. Classes explore body isolations of the head, shoulders,
ribcage, feet and arms and encourage individual expression and the development of personal style. Jazz can be powerful and
percussive or expressive and lyrical. Ever evolving, jazz dance is taught with the music of today together with the classical jazz of
yesterday. Classes teach basic jazz dance technique, terminology and movement quality with an emphasis on proper execution of jazz
isolations, rhythms and style performed to contemporary music.
Tap
Tap is a form of dance characterised by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates that are attached to both the ball and heel of
the dancer’s shoe. These metal plates, when tapped against a hard surface, create a percussive sound and as such the dancers are
considered to be musicians. This style was made famous by Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, the Nicholas brothers and Debbie Reynolds.
Hip Hop
A high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s
hottest video choreographers. Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin', locking, and breaking as well as freestyle
movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse and forever
changing..
Lyrical/ contemporary
Lyrical/contemporary dance form that has its roots in ballet. It emphasises the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in
movement. This class focuses on the breath (inhale/exhale), which brings quality to one’s movement. Concepts of
overcurve/undercurve, contraction/release, musicality and rhythm are explored. Teachers incorporate an eclectic blend of
contemporary and post-modern movement into their classes. The classes also encourage students to develop their own self exploration
in movement quality by allowing them to improvise movements.
Neo classical which a a more traditional term is also explored in this class which is a more classical based style compared to the more
modern style of contemporary/creative dance style
3yrs & 4 yrs old kinder ballet
The kinder classes are all based on the cecchetti pre primary syllabus but done in a fun creative way. The younger members of the
school need to be nurtured in order to gain the most out of their dancing. These classes are taught by a qualified dance and
kindergarten teacher who understands how to young children develop and can get the most out of their dancing. Students learn the
fundamentals of ballet technique example 1st position, posture, skips, gallops, walking correctly etc but all with the use of props and
imagination. The students never quite know that they are learning as it is “Fun’. Classes are also developed to specifically enhance
children’s confidence, independence and social/emotional skills which are the main tools required to be ready for school and later in
life.
Combination classes: little groovers, twinkle toes, superstars, dancing diva’s
Combination classes are a great way for our junior members to learn the fundamentals of ballet, jazz and singing in the one hour
class. This is a “fun’ only class which means there are no exams in any of the styles to be conducted in this class. The classes are fast
paced and designed to keep the children busy, happy and most importantly learning the basics of dance. The children are given the
skills to develop and if in the future wish to move into one of the most serious forms may do so without being left behind’s these classes
were designed for the recreational dancer and for those parents who do not wish for their child to participate in exams or
competitions for the added pressure on the younger students.Students learn about posture, confidence, feet positions, arm positions,
flexibility, skips, gallops, jete’s/pirouettes (in the older classes) and much more. This is a great class to start a younger dancer!
Reggaeton
The dance style Reggaeton could also described as “Latin Hip Hop” as it is a fusion of Latin moves, Hip Hop and Reggae. The dance
style originally came to be because of the style of music which became known as Reggaeton. It is said the music originated in countries
such as the Dominican Republic, Panama and Puerto Rico towards the end of the 90’s. It spread like wild fire through Latin America
and the rest of the world with artists like “Daddy Yankee” with his song “Gasolina” taking the music style from the Ghetto and
basements of Puerto Rico to the mainstream audience. It has been said that Reggaeton music, with its controversial rap lyrics and
“perreo” dance moves has been banned in Puerto Rico, perhaps adding to its appeal.
Reggaeton is a solo dance style and as such in learning this style of dance the focus is on improving movement, isolation and coordination as a solo dancer as opposed to partnered dances the focus is more on connecting with a partner and learning lead/follow
techniques.
Best of all Reggaeton is loads of fun, the music is very upbeat and it’s an incredible workout!
Samba
Samba is a dance which originated in Brazil. It is a very high energy and sexy dance which is lots of fun to learn and all about
moving the hips!
Brazilian Samba is a solo dance which makes this style for those who want to meet new people or can not get the husband to a dance
class.
If you’re thinking of trying this dance style prepare yourself for an incredible workout and loads of fun!
Acrobatics/mini tumblers
Acrobatics is a high energy class that teaches somersaults, cartwheels ( one handed/two handed), round offs, bridges, forward &
backward walk overs and loads more. This class is a great deal of fun and teaches the boys and girls about team work, balance, co
ordination, fexibility, strength etc. This is a great class for those who would like the added skills to assist with dance routines or for
those who love fast past classes.
Drama/speech
This is a new addition to our school in 2011. We are offering group drama classes for fun and developing basic drama/speech skills as
well as exam/competition classes (private by appointment only) .Drama classes are great for those students who might want to
undertake acting or would like to work on their overall confidence. These classes are also designed to improve students acrticulation,
clarity, diction, and grammer in their speech. Many of us dread when we have to do any public speaking, this class teaches the
students how to overcome those worries. Students will also be taught the basics of auditioning for performances.
Broadway jazz
NEW in 2011! Broadway Jazz is a class that has a strong technique-based warm up and concentrates on the choreographic styles of Bob
Fosse & other great choreographers of Broadway musicals such as Chicago, Chorus Line, West Side Story as well as modern musicals
like Hair Spray.
Circus skills
NEW in 2011! The circus skills class is a fast past action packed class that teaches the children Pyramids & balancing, hula hoops,
tumbling & acrobatics, juggling and much more… lots of fun!
Cheerleading
New in 2011! This is all about teamwork whilst incorporating both dance and acrobatics in the one class. Students learn the
fundamentals of balance, co ordination, team spirit and team building skills.
